NEWARK, NJ—RWJBarnabas Health announced today that it has received a grant from the New Jersey Food Security Initiative (NJFSI) to launch a pioneering program aimed at combating food insecurity across the state. This program will place Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) Navigators in each of the health system’s 12 acute care hospitals to assist low-income residents in accessing food, healthy diets, and nutrition education.

Barbara Mintz, Senior Vice President of Social Impact and Community Investment at RWJBarnabas Health, expressed enthusiasm for the partnership with NJFSI. She highlighted the initiative as a transformative approach to improving food security and health equity in New Jersey. The navigators will provide critical support in enrolling individuals in SNAP, aiding with recertification, and connecting them to other food resources.

This initiative aligns with RWJBarnabas Health’s ongoing efforts to address food insecurity through various projects, including the Beth Greenhouse and Farmers Market, the Sadie Vickers Community Garden, and the Food Farmacy Program. These efforts are part of the broader Social Impact and Community Investment practice, which collaborates with state and local agencies to address multiple social determinants of health such as economic stability and affordable housing.

Food insecurity significantly affects health outcomes and was reported by one in twelve New Jersey households in 2022 as a challenge, according to the USDA. This issue results in an estimated annual cost of $1.3 billion to the state. RWJBarnabas Health’s new program aims to mitigate these impacts by ensuring better access to necessary nutritional resources.

MORRISTOWN, N.J. — Jersey Central Power & Light (JCP&L), a subsidiary of FirstEnergy Corp. (NYSE: FE), has initiated a significant $78 million upgrade to a transmission substation in Morristown. The project is designed to elevate critical equipment above potential flood levels, significantly enhancing service reliability for 23,000 customers in northern New Jersey.

The initiative responds to the increasing flood risk from the nearby Whippany River, especially pertinent during hurricane season. By raising substation equipment, JCP&L aims to prevent or minimize power outages due to flooding.

Doug Mokoid, FirstEnergy’s President in New Jersey, emphasized the project’s importance, acknowledging the support from local officials. He stated, “This project is a major undertaking that will help ensure that our customers continue to receive the safe, reliable service they expect from us even as our state sees increasing impacts from Mother Nature.”

In addition to infrastructure upgrades, the project includes aesthetic enhancements to the substation site, which lies along a busy residential and commercial thoroughfare. Plans include planting shade and ornamental trees, installing decorative pavers, and adding sculptural benches. A new screening wall will also be erected to provide a visual barrier and enhanced security around the substation equipment, requiring a variance due to height restrictions from the town.

The upgraded facility will play a crucial role in local and regional power distribution, connecting with other substations across northern New Jersey. The project is slated for completion by December 2025.

JCP&L serves approximately 1.1 million customers across 13 counties in New Jersey. For more information, customers can follow JCP&L on X (formerly known as Twitter) @JCP_L, on Facebook at facebook.com/JCPandL, or visit their website at jcp-l.com.

NEW YORK, NY—Police Commissioner of New York City, addressing concerns about the NYPD’s disciplinary process, reaffirmed his commitment to maintaining a fair and transparent system. Commissioner Caban emphasized his role as a major stakeholder in fostering trust and ensuring that officers adhere to the highest ethical standards, dismissing any claims that his management undermines these values as unfounded.

Since 2012, the NYPD has adhered to a memorandum of understanding (MOU) with the Civilian Complaint Review Board (CCRB), allowing the department to retain certain cases under specified conditions. These include cases involving officers with no prior substantiated CCRB cases or departmental charges, and instances where a related criminal investigation is underway. The MOU, subject to public scrutiny through hearings and accessible online, ensures transparency in the decision-making process.

“Despite those facts, 91 percent of our officers have never had a misconduct allegation. And appropriate adjudication ensures that 83 percent of officers with an allegation never have a second.” he said in a statement.

The process involves a comprehensive review by the NYPD’s Department Advocate’s Office (DAO), which includes analyzing body-worn camera footage, surveillance videos, and witness statements. Recommendations are made through a chain of command to Commissioner Caban, who makes the final decision on whether to retain a case. Written objections from the CCRB are possible, and all such decisions are documented in the CCRB’s quarterly reports.

Commissioner Caban refuted the notion of secrecy or manipulation in the process, noting that most cases align with the CCRB’s recommendations unless a thorough review suggests otherwise. He cited examples where context was crucial in decision-making, leading to the retention of cases under the guidelines of a disciplinary matrix, which is also publicly available.

Highlighting the efficiency of the NYPD’s disciplinary actions, Commissioner Caban pointed out that in 2023, the CCRB took over 200 days longer on average to resolve cases compared to the DAO. He also raised concerns about the CCRB’s lower trial conviction rates and occasional failures to meet statutory deadlines, which he argued impacts the fairness of the process.

Commissioner Caban concluded by underscoring the disciplinary measures taken against officers, including terminations and suspensions that translated into significant financial penalties. He reiterated his dedication to balancing law enforcement with accountability, ensuring the NYPD’s disciplinary process remains both just and effective.

Washington, D.C. — In a recent speech, President Joe Biden inadvertently read the phrase “end of quote” from the teleprompter, echoing a similar mistake made in the past.

The incident occurred just days after Biden faced criticism during four days of debate over his fitness for office. During the brief four-minute speech, after which he took no questions, Biden again fell into the teleprompter trap, a gaffe reminiscent of news anchor Ron Burgundy’s fictional on-air errors.

This slip has sparked further discussions regarding the President’s reliance on scripted prompts during public addresses.
