Protecting Consumer Privacy while Building a Smarter Grid

by Shore News Network January 7, 2015
By Shore News Network

Smart grid technologies have the capacity to create tremendous new value for electricity consumers: from advanced IT and communication technologies that improve the overall operation of our nation’s electricity transmission and distribution networks; to smart meters and digital sensors that help utilities quickly identify and minimize the extent of outages when they do occur. In addition, consumers now have the ability to monitor and manage their electricity use in far greater detail by tapping into the data generated by smart meters.

Many of these emerging technologies —which provide tremendous benefits not only for the nation’s electric system but for consumers throughout the United States—will result in an increase in the amount of data collected regarding grid operating characteristics, including customer energy use data. As the nation’s electric infrastructure is modernized, it is critically important to ensure that the collection of data is performed in a manner that yields the greatest benefits for consumers, while continuing to rigorously protect their privacy.

Standing in the Old Senate Chamber, Vice President Biden — who served as a senator himself for more than 30 years — swore in senators both new and old, and met with their families.

Senator Diane Allen (R-Burlington) issued the following statement after legislation she sponsored granting free death certificates to veterans was signed into law today by Acting Governor Kim Guadagno.

“Eliminating this hurtle for families mourning the death of a loved one who served our country will give them one less thing to worry about during a very difficult time and hopefully provide some level of comfort,” said Allen. “Too often our society fails to recognize the tremendous sacrifices that veterans and their families have made. This measure is now another small way for us as a state to show our appreciation for veterans and their families.”

Pennacchio Announces New Senate Republican Bills to Foster Job Creation, Retention

Following the most-recent news of a major New Jersey employer reportedly going to move its operations and employees to a more affordable, business-friendly state, Assistant Senate Republican Leader Joe Pennacchio unveiled several new bills to lower excessive costs for businesses and in turn create opportunities for New Jersey families, residents, entrepreneurs and employers.

“Today we read of yet another company that could take 1,000 hard working employees and families to a state where it reportedly costs as much as 20 percent less to do business,” said Pennacchio. “We know from talking with employers that we have to take feasible steps to address the high energy costs and overall cost of doing business in New Jersey that puts companies here at a steep disadvantage and makes it much more difficult to add jobs. We also need a fuller understanding of how New Jersey’s tax policies and incentive programs stack up to those in other states.”

BEACH-WHELAN RESOLUTION TO BRING AWARENESS TO GI BILL NOW LAW

by Shore News Network January 7, 2015
By Shore News Network

A resolution sponsored by Senators Jim Beach and Jim Whelan that would bring awareness to veterans’ benefits provided under the federal GI Bill such as college tuition assistance was signed into law today.

“The brave men and women who have served in our armed forces deserve our honor and respect. We work to show our appreciation through a commitment of benefits such as educational opportunities, quality health care or assistance in transitioning into the workforce,” said SenatorBeach, D-Camden and Gloucester, Chairman of the Senate Veterans and Military Affairs Committee. “By designating a week-long period each year as ‘Veterans’ Education Awareness Week,’ we can help to maximize their education benefits by making them aware of the tuition assistance that they have earned.”

“The Post 9-11 GI Bill is a small gesture of thanks to the men and women who stand up for our country’s freedom and security by serving in our Armed Forces,” said Senator Whelan, D-Atlantic. “Unfortunately, many service members are not aware of the benefits available to them and how they can go about receiving them. Through this awareness week, we can help veterans transition from soldier to student.”

The resolution, SJR-41, would designate the second full week in November of each year as “Veterans’ Education Awareness Week” to raise awareness of the Post 9/11 GI Bill, which provides educational benefits to veterans.

The Post-9/11 Veterans Educational Assistance Act, otherwise known as the Post 9/11 GI Bill, provides financial assistance to veterans and active duty National Guard and reserve members to help reduce the cost of attending college. According to a survey conducted by the American Council on Education on the first year the GI Bill was in effect, 38 percent of respondents reported having difficulties understanding their benefits and choosing the best educational benefits for their needs.  The Senators note that with this awareness week, hopefully more veterans will take advantage of the benefits they have earned.

The first GI Bill was signed by President Franklin Roosevelt during WWII and provided an estimated 7.8 million service members with the opportunity to attend college.

The 2015 Veterans’ Education Awareness Week will begin on November 8.

Lagana Proposes Property Tax Relief for Senior Volunteers

by Shore News Network January 7, 2015
By Shore News Network

Bill is Part of Lawmaker’s Larger Tax Relief Efforts

Assemblyman Joseph Lagana has introduced legislation to help senior residents cut their property tax bills though volunteerism.

“This would be another piece of the effort to reform New Jersey’s tax system to ease the burden on middle-class families and senior citizens,” said Lagana (D-Bergen/Passaic). “This needs to be a multi-pronged creative effort, and this is something different we can try. Residents who volunteer will also be helping fill a local need, so in the end this would be a true win-win for everyone in the shared goal of tax relief…”

Singleton Introduces Legislation Inspired by Recent Death of Cinnaminson Firefighter

by Shore News Network January 7, 2015
By Shore News Network

Measure Would Ensure Health Coverage for Family Members of Deceased First Responders

Assemblyman Troy Singleton has introduced legislation to help ensure medical coverage is not cancelled abruptly for family members of deceased first responders, a measure that was inspired by the recent death of a Cinnaminson firefighter.

“Most of us go to work everyday and never worry about whether we’ll return home safely,” said Singleton (D-Burlington). “For family members of first responders, this is a persistent fear every day. This is the least we can do to help honor the sacrifices their loved ones make day in and day out. Whether Lt. Hunter’s death was a direct result of his official duties is immaterial given the constant sacrifices he has made throughout his career.”

After months of preparation, with invitations delivered to everyone from New Jersey Commissioner of Education David Hespe to parents, politicians and school board members, Delran Education Association President Michael Kaminski and his members directed their efforts toward final preparations: setting up a registration table, adjusting the lighting, checking the microphone, and most important, testing the wireless technology. Within the hour, nearly 500 adults would need that wireless technology for DEA’s “Take the PARCC” event on Dec. 3. That night they would get a feel for what their children will experience this spring when the actual PARCC tests are administered.
