Texas A&M Student Assistant Hits WVU Players During Liberty Bowl

by Phil Stilton January 3, 2015
By Phil Stilton

Texas A&M sideline student assistant Mike Lowery crossed the line as he assaulted students from West Virginia University who came near him on the sidelines on several occasions.  The well intended body check here and a calculated punch to the back of the head there, but Lowery claims he didn’t do it on purpose.

“Something like this was never my intention,” he tweeted after the game. “I haven’t spoken with any reporters about anything.”

“In the heat of the moment of yesterday’s game I did lose myself with everything going on,” he said of the event. “To the players involved I  apologize for the ignorance I displayed and there was nothing personal with the actions made on that sideline yesterday.”

After being notified of the hits, head coach Kevin Sumlin left Lowery in the locker room, nowhere to be found on the sidelines, leading to speculation that Lowery is now an “Ex-sideline student assistant”.

Did a Tornado Really Touch Down at the Rose Bowl?

by Phil Stilton January 3, 2015
By Phil Stilton

PASADENA,CA-Swirling winds swept canopies and furniture twenty to thirty feet in the air in a scene reminiscent of a tornado suspense film.   But did a tornado touch down a few hundred feet from where the Rose Bowl was being played?

It was a dust devil, a common occurrence from California to the mid-west.  While a dust devil has similarities to a tornado, it is not a tornado.

WIKIPEDIA: A dust devil is a strong, well-formed, and relatively long-lived whirlwind, ranging from small (half a meter wide and a few meters tall) to large (more than 10 meters wide and more than 1000 meters tall). The primary vertical motion is upward. Dust devils are usually harmless, but can on rare occasions grow large enough to pose a threat to both people and property. They are comparable to tornadoes in that both are a weather phenomenon of a vertically oriented rotating column of air. Most tornadoes are associated with a larger parent circulation, the mesocyclone on the back of a supercell thunderstorm. Dust devils form as a swirling updraft under sunny conditions during fair weather, rarely coming close to the intensity of a tornado.

Our little puppy trio, Puddy, Pancake and Leon, are doing very well and getting…

by Shore News Network January 3, 2015
By Shore News Network

Our little puppy trio, Puddy, Pancake and Leon, are doing very well and getting lots of love and outstanding medical care at Pet PT in Cherry Hill. Dr. Russell Howe-Smith and his staff are working hard to ensure that our little puppies have the best possible chance at living full, normal lives. They have a long, long way to go, but they could not be in better hands and we are grateful to Dr. Howe-Smith for taking on this long-term puppy project.

In case you missed their original story, these little puppies were brought in to our AHS Newark facility not long before Christmas when they were about 10 weeks old. The puppies have Swimmers Syndrome, and cannot walk or hold themselves up. In many cases with Swimmers, many puppies can make a full recovery when they begin treatment at around 3 weeks old. These puppies will be much tougher to rehabilitate, since their treatment only just began. They are the result of an irresponsible pet owner, and it is such a shame that they were not brought in sooner. At least they are getting the best treatment now, and though we’re unsure of what their futures hold, we are so glad that they will now have a chance at a future.

We’ve received these videos and photos, courtesy of Pet PT, showing some of the pups during their physical therapy treatments. We are so grateful to have our Res-Q Fund to enable us to get the puppy trio the help that they need, and as you can see, there is never a time when this fund is not needed. To make a donation to our Res-Q Fund, click here: http://www.ahscares.org/shop/item.asp?itemid=28&catid=5

Puddy, Pancake and Leon are not available for adoption at this time. They have a long, tough road ahead of them. We will keep you all updated on their progress here on our Facebook page, and on our website- www.ahscares.org

We have some more good news to share for another deserving pet…..our beautiful bunny Babs got a wonderful home! Woo hoo Babs! This friendly and lovable bunny was on the hop for several weeks when she got away from her home, and no one came looking for her. One of our staff members noticed her hopping around, looking for something to eat. He tried and tried and finally, was able to rescue this sweet little girl and bring her to safety. You would think that Babs would be skiddish and leery of people after her ordeal, but she just could not be any sweeter. We are so happy that she got herself noticed quickly, and now Babs is living the great life that she deserves. Congratulations Babs and family, and may you have a long, happy, healthy life together!

By Shore News Network

This beautiful young lady is Sundae, a 3 year old calico cutie that would just love a great home of her own. Sundae was one of several cats living in a barn and being cared for by an animal lover. When this person passed away, there was no one to care for her animals, so we took in many of them. Sundae is happy to be safe and cared for, and is eager to move ahead in a wonderful new home. Sundae is a pleasant and sweet girl that is playful, active, and outgoing. She makes friends very easily and gets along great with everyone she meets. She likes other cats and is happy to socialize with them in our free-roaming area. Sundae would be a loving companion that would be happy to sun herself on a comfy perch by day and curl up in your lap every night. She would make the perfect addition to any loving, caring family that will welcome her as part of the family and cherish her forever. File#23875 8/27/14

It doesn’t get more heartless than this folks…..this handsome young pup thought he was going out for a walk one day but instead, his owner walked him right up to some railroad tracks, tied him to the tracks, and left him there. Thank goodness someone spotted him before it was too late. He has been named Rally, since our AHS Newark staff has all rallied around this sweet boy, and he is ready to put this whole awful mess behind him and start over. Rally is in our AHS Newark facility. For all questions and adoption inquiries, please contact them. Click here for the full story on Rally: http://www.ahscares.org/showarchive.asp?id=12392

U2's BONO: I May Never Play Guitar Again

by Phil Stilton January 3, 2015
By Phil Stilton

DAILY NEWS-The U2 singer’s November bike crash in Central Park left him so torn up that he’s not sure he’ll ever pick up a guitar again. In a lengthy year-end message to fans on the band’s website, Bono made his first comments about the Nov. 16 wreck, saying he “blanked out on impact.” “I have no memory of how I ended up in New York Presbyterian with my humerus bone sticking through my leather jacket. Very punk rock as injuries go,” the 54-year-old rocker wrote. The Irish rocker broke his left shoulder in three places, shattered his left upper arm, and broke a bone in the orbit of his left eye in the brutal wreck, which doctors said occurred when he swerved to avoid another rider.

Viral Christmas Beggar to the Liquor Store Video Creator Fights Off Fake Claims

RT-It was the story that melted the hearts of millions on Christmas eve – when a homeless man called Thomas suddenly received 100 dollars from a stranger. After pocketing the money, the man headed to a liquor store, but instead of spending it on alcohol, he bought food to his beggar friends and poor people. But skeptics have picked holes in the clip they say is too perfect, and an eyewitness claims there’s no way Thomas could have been secretly filmed, because he and the author arrived at the shop in the same car. RT talked to both – the hero in need and the serial prankster – they denied the storm of accusations

No New Years Eve Party on the Sun to End 2014

by Phil Stilton January 3, 2015
By Phil Stilton

There were no fireworks on the sun to welcome in the New Year and only a few C-class flares during the last day of 2014. Instead, the sun starts 2015 with an enormous coronal hole near the south pole. This image, captured on Jan. 1, 2015 by the Atmospheric Imaging Assembly (AIA) instrument on NASA’s Solar Dynamics Observatory, shows the coronal hole as a dark region in the south.

Coronal holes are regions of the corona where the magnetic field reaches out into space rather than looping back down onto the surface. Particles moving along those magnetic fields can leave the sun rather than being trapped near the surface. Those trapped particles can heat up and glow, giving us the lovely AIA images. In the parts of the corona where the particles leave the sun, the glow is much dimmer and the coronal hole looks dark.

Coronal holes were first seen in images taken by astronauts on board NASA’s Skylab space station in 1973 and 1974. They can be seen for a long time, although the exact shape changes all the time. The polar coronal hole can remain visible for five years or longer. Each time a coronal hole rotates by the Earth we can measure the particles flowing out of the hole as a high-speed stream, another source of space weather.

Charged particles in the Earth’s radiation belts are accelerated when the high-speed stream runs into the Earth’s magnetosphere. The acceleration of particles in the magnetosphere is studied by NASA’s Van Allen Probesmission.

As Solar Cycle 24 fades, the number of flares each day will get smaller, but the coronal holes provide another source of space weather that needs to be understood and predicted.
