BRONX, N.Y. — A 58-year-old man who was assaulted in August has died from his injuries, and the case has now been classified as a homicide, according to authorities.

The victim, whose identity is pending family notification, was punched in the head during an altercation, causing him to fall to the ground. EMS responded to the scene and transported him to Saint Barnabas Hospital, where he was being treated for his injuries. On Saturday, September 7, 2024, the victim succumbed to those injuries, officials said.

The Office of the Chief Medical Examiner has determined the cause of death to be a homicide. The incident is under investigation by the NYPD.

Dequan Jackson, 29, of Webster Avenue in the Bronx, was arrested and charged with third-degree assault in connection with the August 4 incident, which occurred in the confines of the 52nd Precinct. Jackson was taken into custody at 5:41 p.m. that day. Further charges are now possible following the victim’s death.

The investigation remains ongoing.
