Bronx, NY – A Bronx man has been sentenced to five to 15 years in prison after a jury found him guilty of fatally stabbing his roommate during a violent confrontation inside their Sheridan Avenue apartment.
District Attorney Darcel D. Clark announced that 39-year-old Akino George received the sentence Friday from Bronx Supreme Court Justice Steven Hornstein following his conviction for second-degree manslaughter in May.
According to trial evidence, the incident unfolded on the morning of March 7, 2022, when George was choking and assaulting his girlfriend inside their Concourse Village residence at 1011 Sheridan Avenue. His roommate, Edwin Acevedo, 30, intervened, forcing George out of the apartment and locking the door to protect the woman.
George forced his way back inside, kicking down the door before stabbing Acevedo multiple times in the stomach with a kitchen knife. Acevedo was rushed to NYC Health + Hospitals/Lincoln, where he was pronounced dead.
George fled the state after the stabbing and was arrested more than seven months later in Massachusetts on October 17, 2022.
District Attorney Clark said, “The defendant was strangling his girlfriend and when his roommate tried to stop him, the defendant viciously stabbed the man causing his death. This sentence brings justice for the victim and his family.”
