Bronx, NY – A Bronx man was sentenced Thursday for firing multiple shots on a crowded Fordham Road, wounding a 2-year-old boy as he walked with his mother.
The sentencing follows a guilty plea to attempted murder in the second degree.
The child survived after being treated at a local hospital.
Key Points
- A 20-year-old Bronx man was sentenced to seven years for a March 2024 shooting
- Five shots were fired on Fordham Road, with one striking a toddler in the back
- The defendant pleaded guilty in September and received additional post-release supervision
According to investigators, Freddy Flores of Walton Avenue opened fire just after 1:40 p.m. on March 30, 2024, during a confrontation near Fordham Road and the Grand Concourse.
The shots were directed at an individual across the street as weekend crowds filled the area.
One bullet struck the 2-year-old boy on the opposite sidewalk as the child walked with his mother.
Child treated and recovered
The victim was taken to NYC Health + Hospitals Jacobi, where he received treatment for the injury.
Officials said the child later recovered, though the incident sparked widespread concern due to the time and location of the shooting.
Witnesses described the environment as busy with shoppers and pedestrians at the time.
Guilty plea leads to sentencing
Flores pleaded guilty to attempted murder in the second degree on September 17.
Bronx Supreme Court Justice Timothy Lewis sentenced him to seven years in prison followed by five years of post-release supervision.
Officials said the case highlights the risks posed by gunfire in densely populated areas and underscored the swift legal response that followed the investigation.
