WASHINGTON — A Washington, D.C., man was sentenced Friday to 32 years in prison for the 2022 shooting death of a shoe reseller outside a shopping mall, federal prosecutors said.

Darius Anderson, 23, was convicted in September 2024 of first-degree murder while armed and other related offenses in the killing of 30-year-old Israel Mattocks. The shooting took place on June 15, 2022, outside Shoe City at the East River Park Shopping Mall in Northeast D.C.

According to prosecutors, Mattocks had asked Anderson to help him buy shoes earlier that day. After a brief argument in a nearby store, Anderson returned home, then came back to Shoe City, where he ambushed Mattocks as he exited the store, firing multiple shots. Mattocks was struck at least six times and died shortly afterward.

Superior Court Judge Marisa Demeo handed down the sentence, following the jury’s guilty verdict.

Authorities say the case highlights the dangers of escalating disputes and the deadly consequences of gun violence in the city.
