WASHINGTON, D.C. — Congressional Democrats are condemning the Trump administration’s statement to freeze $50 million in federal funding originally designated for condom distribution in Gaza, part of a broader spending review ordered by the White House.

White House Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt confirmed that the funding suspension is part of President Trump’s executive order to reassess federal expenditures, ensuring that all spending aligns with U.S. national interests and priorities.

“DOGE and OMB also found that there was about to be 50 million taxpayer dollars that went out the door to fund condoms in Gaza. That is a preposterous waste of taxpayer money,” she said. “So, that’s what this pause is focused on: being good stewards of tax dollars.”

Leavitt did not say when the funding was approved or provide immediate documentation to support the claim.

The move has sparked backlash from Democratic lawmakers, who argue that Trump is overstepping his authority by halting funds previously approved by Congress.

“While President Trump illegally pauses federal funding from Congress, the Senate must not be business as usual,” Senator Elizabeth Warren (D-MA) wrote on social media. “We do not consent to this lawless power grab.”

Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer (D-NY) echoed those concerns, calling the decision “lawless, destructive, cruel, mean, nasty, illegal.”

The funding freeze is part of a broader effort by the Trump administration to reevaluate foreign aid and domestic programs, as federal agencies undergo a comprehensive review of budget allocations.
