85-year-old woman killed in Jersey City apartment fire under investigation
JERSEY CITY, NJ – A fire that tore through a fifth-floor apartment in Jersey City on Tuesday night left an elderly woman dead and has prompted an investigation by local and county authorities.
At approximately 8:45 p.m., the Jersey City Fire Department responded to reports of smoke at 11 College Drive, a five-story residential building. Firefighters arrived to find heavy smoke pouring from one of the upper units. During their efforts to extinguish the fire, they discovered an unresponsive woman inside the affected apartment.
The victim, identified as 85-year-old Maxine Sullivan of Jersey City, was transported to Jersey City Medical Center, where she was pronounced dead shortly after 10 p.m.
The Hudson County Regional Arson Task Force and the Jersey City Fire Department are jointly investigating the fire. While the cause of the blaze remains under review, officials say there are currently no indications that it was suspicious.
No additional injuries or displacements have been reported, and authorities have not released further details regarding the extent of the damage.
