Fatal crash on Route 1 in Bensalem leaves Philadelphia man dead after multi-vehicle collision

A chain-reaction crash on Route 1 in Bensalem Township left a 45-year-old Philadelphia man dead after his disabled vehicle was struck by multiple vehicles early Tuesday morning.

Bensalem Township, PA – A fatal three-vehicle crash early Tuesday morning on southbound Route 1 in Bensalem Township claimed the life of a Philadelphia man after his disabled vehicle was struck while he was outside of it, according to the Bensalem Township Police Department.

The crash occurred at approximately 5:30 a.m. Tuesday, April 7, 2026, near Rockhill Drive. Bensalem Township Police responded alongside the Bensalem Volunteer Fire Department and EMS personnel following reports of a serious multi-vehicle collision in the southbound lanes.

Investigators said a 2007 Honda Fit had come to a stop in the #2 southbound lane due to mechanical issues. The driver exited the vehicle before a 2022 Kia Seltos approached and struck the disabled Honda. The force of that collision pushed the Honda into the driver, who was standing outside the vehicle. Moments later, a 2017 Jeep Cherokee also struck the Honda, compounding the crash.

Sequence of events leading to fatal impact

Bensalem Township Police identified the driver of the Honda Fit as Julio Ricardo Munoz, 45, of Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. Munoz sustained fatal injuries at the scene after being struck during the chain-reaction collision.

According to the department’s statement, “The vehicle had been experiencing mechanical difficulties prior to stopping on the highway.” Police added, “While outside the vehicle, the Honda was struck by an approaching 2022 Kia Seltos. That impact caused the Honda to strike the driver who was outside of the vehicle.”

The Honda was not occupied solely by Munoz. Authorities confirmed a front-seat passenger was inside the vehicle at the time of the crash and survived. “The passenger was transported to Jefferson-Torresdale Hospital for non-life threatening injuries,” the department stated.

Investigation ongoing, impairment not suspected

Police said the crash remains under active investigation as officers continue to review evidence and reconstruct the sequence of events. At this stage, investigators do not believe impairment played a role.

“This crash is under investigation and at this time, drugs or alcohol do not appear to have played a factor in this crash,” Bensalem Township Police said in their official release.

Traffic disruptions were reported in the southbound lanes of Route 1 during the morning commute as emergency crews worked to clear the scene and conduct the initial investigation. The extent of any lane closures or delays was not specified, but crashes on this stretch of Route 1 frequently impact regional traffic flow due to its role as a major corridor in Bucks County.

Highway safety risks and disabled vehicles

Incidents involving disabled vehicles on high-speed roadways continue to pose significant safety risks across Pennsylvania and nationwide. Drivers who exit vehicles on active highways are particularly vulnerable, especially in low-visibility conditions such as early morning hours.

According to transportation safety data, secondary collisions—where a stopped or disabled vehicle is struck by oncoming traffic—are a leading cause of serious injuries and fatalities on major roadways. Law enforcement agencies routinely advise drivers to move vehicles off travel lanes whenever possible and remain inside with seatbelts fastened if it is unsafe to exit.

In this case, the positioning of the Honda Fit in an active travel lane created a hazardous situation that escalated quickly when approaching vehicles were unable to avoid the obstruction.
