Driver flees traffic stop then caught with fentanyl crack and marijuana in Macon County
FRANKLIN, NC — A traffic stop in Macon County quickly escalated into a foot chase and a major drug arrest after a driver bolted from his vehicle and was captured moments later with fentanyl, crack cocaine, and marijuana, authorities said.
The incident unfolded Thursday, January 29, when deputies stopped a vehicle that was driving in an unsafe manner. As soon as the vehicle came to a stop, the driver took off on foot. Law enforcement officers quickly apprehended the suspect nearby.
A subsequent search led to the seizure of marijuana, crack cocaine, and a trafficking-level amount of fentanyl, according to the Macon County Sheriff’s Office.
The driver was identified as Tracy Bernard Gibson, who now faces a long list of charges including trafficking fentanyl, possession with intent to sell or deliver fentanyl, possession with intent to sell or deliver crack cocaine, maintaining a vehicle or dwelling for controlled substances, possession of marijuana, possession of drug paraphernalia, resisting public officers, habitual felon indictment, and a failure to appear warrant.
Gibson was issued no bond and remains in custody.
Sheriff Brent Holbrooks praised the rapid response by deputies, saying the stop unfolded quickly but ended with dangerous narcotics being removed from the community.
The case remains active as it proceeds through the court system.
