NEWARK, N.J. — NJ Transit riders faced delays of up to 20 minutes Friday morning after the agency reported rail congestion stemming from a late Amtrak train entering Penn Station New York.
In a message posted on X, formerly Twitter, NJ Transit said: “Due to congestion resulting from a late Amtrak train, NJ TRANSIT rail service is subject to up to 20-minute delays in and out of Penn Station New York.”
The disruption affected several lines during the morning rush, with trains backed up as they approached the shared tracks leading into one of the busiest transit hubs in the region. Amtrak owns and operates much of the infrastructure in and around Penn Station, which is used by both Amtrak and NJ Transit trains.
Commuters traveling through Penn Station have experienced recurring delays in recent weeks, particularly during peak hours, often due to infrastructure constraints and track sharing.
Penn Station’s track limitations and shared rail lines frequently cause congestion that can quickly spread across both Amtrak and NJ Transit schedules. Friday’s delay marks another example of how a single late train can affect service for thousands of passengers across the region.
