TRENTON, NJ — Governor Phil Murphy has signed bipartisan legislation that establishes a state certification program for LGBTQ+-owned businesses in New Jersey. This new law builds on Executive Order No. 295 from 2022, which initially directed the New Jersey Department of the Treasury to create such a certification to support underrepresented groups.

The legislation, celebrated just weeks before PRIDE month, aims to enhance the economic participation of LGBTQ+ businesses by providing them with greater access to contracting opportunities and governmental programs. Certification, which is free of charge, allows businesses to proudly identify as LGBTQ+-owned in their promotional activities. The program is managed by the New Jersey Division of Revenue and Enterprise Services and requires that businesses be at least 51% LGBTQ+ owned and controlled.

Governor Murphy remarked on the importance of supporting the LGBTQ+ community, not just symbolically but also economically. As of today, the program has certified 141 LGBTQ+ businesses in the state, enhancing their visibility and operational scope.

State Treasurer Elizabeth Maher Muoio highlighted the success of the program in promoting diversity within the business community, alongside similar initiatives for minority, women, veteran, and disabled-veteran-owned businesses. The certification is valid for five years, after which businesses must reapply.

This law was backed by primary sponsors Senators Nellie Pou, Teresa M. Ruiz, and Assemblymembers Benjie E. Wimberly, Sterley S. Stanley, Donald A. Guardian, and Luanne Peterpaul, who collectively praised the legislation as a step toward economic inclusivity and recognition of LGBTQ+ businesses in New Jersey.
