Date night detour lands Greenbelt woman $50,000 Powerball prize
GREENBELT, MD – A Prince George’s County woman chasing a growing Powerball jackpot turned a night out with her husband into a $50,000 win after missing the $154 million grand prize by a single number.
The Greenbelt resident claimed her third-tier prize Thursday, Feb. 20, at Maryland Lottery headquarters in Baltimore. The winning ticket was purchased for the Monday, Feb. 16 Powerball drawing.
As jackpots for multi-state games climbed following Valentine’s Day weekend, the estimated Powerball prize had reached $154 million. The winner purchased five Powerball combinations, a $10 total purchase, hoping to capitalize on the rising jackpot.
While having dinner and drinks with her husband at American Legion Post 136 in Greenbelt on Feb. 16, she remembered the drawing and the couple each bought tickets for that night’s game. They put the tickets aside and did not immediately check the results.
It was not until Wednesday, Feb. 18, that the tickets were scanned. The couple initially believed the prize was $100 after matching four of the five white balls. A scan using the Maryland Lottery app confirmed the ticket also matched the red Powerball, securing a $50,000 prize.
The winning numbers matched four white balls plus the Powerball, one number short of the jackpot.
The couple later shared the news with their children. The winner told lottery officials she plans to use part of the winnings for home projects and save the remaining funds.
The winning ticket was purchased at American Legion Post 136, located at 6900 Greenbelt Road in Greenbelt.
