A decade of dedicated service
K9 Opus joined the Howell Township Police Department in 2016, quickly becoming one of its most active and dependable canine officers. Cross-trained in narcotics detection, apprehension, and tracking, Opus assisted in numerous investigations that led to major drug arrests and successful suspect captures.
Throughout his career, Opus’s skills proved invaluable during joint operations with other Monmouth County law enforcement agencies. His precision and reliability earned praise from colleagues and community members alike.
A bond built on trust and teamwork
Cpl Jesse Moore, Opus’s longtime handler, reflected on their years together, noting that their work extended far beyond police operations. “Some of the most enjoyable work that he and I were involved with were the K9 demonstrations we conducted for community groups,” Moore said.
Those public demonstrations became a highlight for local residents, showcasing the discipline, obedience, and teamwork required of police canines.

Tomorrow’s final call ceremony will bring officers, residents, and local officials together to recognize Opus’s service. The event will commemorate his role in promoting safety and strengthening the connection between police and the community.
