Hurricane katrina survivor mobilizes to provide aid to macon county residents

MACON COUNTY, N.C. — The Macon County Sheriff’s Office expressed deep gratitude on Wednesday for the outpouring of community support following the devastation caused by Hurricane Helene. Sheriff Robert Holland highlighted the resilience and compassion of local residents who have stepped up to aid their neighbors in need during the ongoing recovery efforts.

Among those recognized was Noel Buras, a Highlands resident who experienced the aftermath of Hurricane Katrina and found refuge in Macon County. Motivated by the help he received years ago, Buras has mobilized donations to support those affected by Hurricane Helene, reflecting his commitment to giving back.

“His contributions not only provide immediate relief but also symbolize the enduring power of empathy and community unity,” the sheriff’s office said in a statement.

Joining Buras in the relief efforts was J.J. Rodriguez, a Highlands native currently living in Louisiana, who remains deeply connected to his hometown.

Despite the distance, Rodriguez organized support for residents facing hardship after the storm. His dedication to the community exemplifies the strong ties that bind Highlands, the sheriff’s office noted.

The sheriff’s office also acknowledged Larry Bienvenu, who collaborated with Buras in coordinating critical donations. Bienvenu’s efforts were described as pivotal to the success of the initiative.

“These individuals, along with many others in our community, have shown us the true meaning of partnership and compassion,” the sheriff’s office said. Their efforts have brought vital supplies to families impacted by the hurricane, with sheriff’s office personnel set to deliver these items to neighboring counties in the coming days.

“As we continue to navigate the recovery process, we remain deeply thankful for our community’s support and resilience,” the statement continued, emphasizing that the bonds of partnership, rooted in compassion and gratitude, will continue to strengthen the community.
