In cross-town rivalry, trenton seals victory over ewing with strong fourth quarter

TRENTON, NJ — A dominant fourth quarter helped Trenton defeat Ewing 28-13 in Friday night’s WJFL high school football matchup.

Both teams came into the game with struggling records; Ewing stood at 2-7 and Trenton at 3-6. The contest started off evenly matched with each team scoring a touchdown in the first quarter. Cordell Sloan opened the scoring for Ewing with a 26-yard run, while Keyshawn Wharthen equalized for Trenton with a 9-yard run.

In the second quarter, Wharthen found the end zone again, this time on a 2-yard rush, giving Trenton a 14-7 lead heading into halftime. Neither team was able to score in the third quarter, setting the stage for a crucial final 12 minutes of play.

In the fourth quarter, Jairus Williams narrowed Trenton’s lead with an 8-yard touchdown run for Ewing, but the extra point attempt failed, keeping the score at 14-13. Trenton then pulled away, with Sabri Melvin and Jonel Lince scoring on runs of 12 and 1 yards, respectively.

Wharthen was the standout performer of the night, amassing 144 rushing yards. On the other side, Williams led Ewing in passing with 116 yards, while Sloan was their leading rusher with 34 yards. In receiving, Bryan Carter, Jr. was the top performer for Ewing with 69 yards, while Zavonn Minney led Trenton with 35 receiving yards. JahAir Williams of Trenton contributed defensively with two interceptions.
