WASHINGTON, DC – A chaotic stabbing rampage left six people wounded in the Trinidad neighborhood Thursday afternoon before the suspect was subdued by bystanders and arrested by police, the Metropolitan Police Department announced Friday.

The incident unfolded just after 3:21 p.m. on April 3 in the 1200 block of Meigs Place, Northeast, where a man under the influence of an unknown substance suddenly attacked a female acquaintance with a knife. He then turned the weapon on himself and began threatening bystanders before violently stabbing four more victims.

The suspect fled north on Montello Avenue, where he assaulted a sixth person. Community members intervened, chasing and restraining the suspect near Montello Avenue and Mt. Olivet Road before he could reach additional bystanders.

Fifth District officers, already nearby, arrived quickly and took the suspect into custody without incident. The knife used in the attacks was recovered.

The suspect, identified as 34-year-old Kevin Steve Andrade of Southeast DC, was transported to a local hospital with serious but non-life-threatening injuries. He has been charged with six counts of Assault with Intent to Kill.

All six victims—four women and two men—remain hospitalized in stable condition with injuries that are not considered life-threatening.
