LAUREL, MD – A Laurel resident and longtime lottery enthusiast hit a $50,000 third-tier prize in the Powerball drawing on May 25. The winner, who has been playing the lottery for nearly 50 years, typically purchases tickets weekly on Thursdays.
This fortunate turn of events unfolded when he bought a $10 quick-pick ticket at Starting Gate Liquors located at 3495 Laurel Fort Meade Road.
Initially thinking he had won just $50, he was stunned to learn from the store clerk that his ticket was worth much more and had to be processed at the Lottery headquarters.
With no immediate plans for his newfound wealth aside from paying bills, the winner’s luck is a highlight among the 32 third-tier Powerball prizes claimed in 2024. The next Powerball drawing offers a jackpot annuity estimated at $185 million, with a cash option of $86 million.
