Carroll County man wins $50K lottery prize on April Fool’s Day drawing
Baltimore, MD – A Carroll County man claimed a $50,000 Bonus Match 5 prize after initially doubting the result of his April Fool’s Day drawing ticket, according to Maryland Lottery officials. The winning ticket was purchased at Total Discount Liquors on Liberty Road in Eldersburg.
The player, a regular lottery participant whose previous largest win was $40, said he first thought there was an error when scanning his ticket at a retailer the day after the drawing. A message directed him to lottery headquarters, where a clerk confirmed the prize. “I didn’t believe it!” he said, recalling the moment he learned the value of the ticket.
He claimed the prize Monday at Maryland Lottery headquarters in Baltimore, accompanied by his wife. The couple said the winnings could help them move toward purchasing a home.
Winning ticket verified after confusion at retailer
The winner described feeling uncertain when the machine did not display a standard prize amount. After asking a clerk to check the ticket, the full value of the prize became clear.
Lottery officials confirmed the Eldersburg retailer will receive a $500 bonus for selling the winning ticket, equal to 1% of the prize amount.
The Bonus Match 5 drawing took place April 1, with the winner coming forward to claim the prize several days later.
