Man busted in deadly march shooting of 23-year-old in silver spring

GAITHERSBURG, MD — A Prince George’s County man was arrested Friday in connection with the fatal shooting of Jonah Kimindu Mutua last month in Silver Spring, authorities said.

Arrest made in Upper Marlboro

Douglas David Lacey, 23, was taken into custody without incident by the U.S. Marshals Capital Area Regional Fugitive Task Force and Montgomery County Police Department Task Force Officers, with support from the Prince George’s County Police Department.

Lacey was apprehended in Upper Marlboro on Friday, nearly a month after the shooting that left Mutua dead on Fairdale Terrace in the Silver Spring area.

Authorities said the arrest followed an investigation by the Montgomery County Police Major Crimes Division, which identified Lacey as the primary suspect.

Warrant issued after evidence review

Detectives secured an arrest warrant on Wednesday after gathering evidence that they say linked Lacey to the shooting. He has been charged with first-degree murder in connection with the March 8 incident.

Mutua, 23, was killed in what authorities classified as a homicide. Details about a possible motive or the nature of the encounter have not been released.

Next steps in legal process

Following his arrest, Lacey was transported to the Montgomery County Central Processing Unit. He remains in custody pending a bond hearing, officials said.

No additional suspects or related charges have been announced at this time.
