GREENBELT, Md. – A man has been arrested and charged after Greenbelt police say he vandalized multiple homes by breaking windows with rocks in a residential neighborhood.
The Greenbelt Police Department announced Thursday that officers arrested Nghia Trong Le, who is charged with malicious destruction of property valued at more than $1,000 in connection with the incidents.
According to police, the investigation began Thursday morning when officers responded to the 8200 block of Miner Street to investigate a report of vandalism that had occurred on Monday.
Doorbell camera helps identify suspect
While canvassing the neighborhood, officers discovered additional damage at another residence that had not yet been reported to police. Investigators said the newly discovered damage was consistent with broken windows found at the other homes.
Police credited a homeowner’s doorbell camera with helping identify the suspect.
According to the department, the video showed Le approaching the front of one of the homes before bending down and picking up what appeared to be a rock from the yard.
Investigators said several loud noises consistent with glass breaking could be heard moments later.
Using the video and other evidence gathered during the investigation, officers identified Le as the suspect and took him into custody.
Police continue investigating
Authorities have not released a possible motive for the alleged vandalism or said whether the suspect knew any of the homeowners.
The investigation remains active, and detectives are asking anyone with additional information about the incidents to contact the Greenbelt Police Department.
Residential vandalism can leave homeowners facing costly repairs while also creating concerns about neighborhood safety. Video doorbell systems have increasingly become valuable investigative tools, providing police with evidence that can help identify suspects and corroborate witness accounts.
While the alleged crimes occurred in Maryland, similar vandalism investigations have become more common across the region as more homeowners install doorbell cameras and other residential security systems. Police encourage residents to promptly report suspicious activity and property damage to assist investigations.
Le is expected to face the criminal charge in court as the case proceeds through Maryland’s judicial system.
As with all criminal cases, the charge is an allegation, and the defendant is presumed innocent unless and until proven guilty in court.
