Just after midnight at 12:01 a.m., officers responded to the 700 block of Appleton Street following a report of gunfire. Upon arrival, they found the victim suffering from a life-threatening gunshot wound.

Medics transported the man to a nearby hospital, where he remains in critical condition as of Thursday. Homicide detectives were called in due to the victim’s grave medical status.
