Maryland man turns spare tips into $100K lottery win

Baltimore County driver wins $100K scratch-off using tip money strategy

Baltimore, MD – A Baltimore County man has claimed the first $100,000 top prize in Maryland Lottery’s new Scratch & Match game after purchasing a winning ticket with tip money, officials said Monday. The ticket was sold at Lansdowne Citgo on Hammonds Ferry Road in Halethorpe.

The winner initially believed he had won $50,000 after revealing an “autowin” on the ticket but later discovered a second $50,000 prize upon scratching the remaining portion. “I decided to scratch off the rest of the ticket for fun and saw there was another $50,000,” he said April 6 when claiming the prize.

The man, a delivery driver, said he typically uses tip money to play and avoids withdrawing personal funds for lottery purchases. He also noted a change in routine while scratching the ticket. “I had a lucky coin, but I lost it,” he said.

New scratch-off game still holds top prizes

The Scratch & Match game launched March 20 with nine top prizes of $100,000. Following this claim, eight top prizes remain unclaimed along with two $50,000 second-tier prizes and thousands of additional prizes ranging from $10 to $10,000.

Lottery officials confirmed the retailer will receive a $1,000 bonus for selling the winning ticket.

The winner said he plans to use the money to pay off his car and save the remaining funds.
