Michigan man charged after alleged weightlifting bar attack leaves victim critical

A sleeping man suffered a severe head injury after prosecutors say he was struck repeatedly with a weightlifting bar inside a Chesterfield Township home.

MOUNT CLEMENS, MI – A 46-year-old Macomb County man is facing multiple felony charges after authorities say he attacked his girlfriend’s brother while the victim was asleep on a couch, leaving him hospitalized with life-threatening injuries.

Jevonn Green has been charged with assault with intent to murder, aggravated domestic violence, and assault with a dangerous weapon, according to the Macomb County Prosecutor’s Office. Officials said the alleged assault occurred Sunday at a residence in Chesterfield Township, northeast of Detroit, where Green lived with his girlfriend and her 61-year-old brother.

Prosecutors allege the victim was asleep when Green struck him “on the head several times with a weightlifting bar.” After the attack, Green allegedly woke his girlfriend and “told her to call 911 for her brother,” the prosecutor’s office said.

Victim remains hospitalized in critical condition

The 61-year-old victim was transported to a hospital, where he remained in critical condition as of Thursday. Authorities said he suffered “a decompressed skull fracture and a brain bleed,” injuries consistent with repeated blunt-force trauma.

“It is extremely troubling that a man was allegedly assaulted while he slept, completely defenseless,” said Macomb County Prosecutor Peter Lucido. “Domestic violence is not limited to romantic partners. If you are the victim of domestic violence, call 911 in the event of an emergency.”

Officials have not released additional details about what led up to the alleged attack.

Charges carry potential life sentence

Green was arrested and booked into the Macomb County Jail with bond set at $250,000. Prosecutors said that if he is released, he must wear a GPS tether, submit to drug testing three times weekly, and is prohibited from returning to the residence or consuming alcohol or drugs.

Because the case is being treated as a fourth offense, Green faces a mandatory minimum of 25 years in prison if convicted on any of the charges, with the possibility of a life sentence.

During his arraignment Thursday, Green’s defense attorney requested a psychiatric evaluation, which the court granted. He is scheduled to return to court on April 16.
