Newark, NJ – New Jersey is positioning itself at the forefront of America’s clean energy transformation, with leaders calling for massive investment in offshore wind as a key to the state’s economic and environmental future.
While Sherrill has clammed up on offshore wind since announcing her run for governor, just last year, she penned an op-ed calling Governor Murphy’s offshore-wind energy agenda, “The Next Frontier” for New Jersey,” Sherrill said. “The Garden State has a legacy of meeting challenges and pushing our country forward. Dating back to Thomas Edison and Bell Labs, New Jersey’s innovation economy has changed the course of history, and our manufacturing sector has built this nation.
“And now, we are perfectly positioned to shape the future by becoming a global leader in the renewable offshore wind space. New Jersey has already made critical investments in offshore wind that, when paired with federal funding, set us up to dominate the clean energy economy.
“By doing so, we’ll protect our planet, bring good-paying jobs to our state, and lower energy costs for families.”

Offshore wind seen as economic engine
Sherrill, who previously chaired the House Environment Subcommittee on Science, Space, and Technology, said the state’s investments in offshore wind—combined with federal funding through the Inflation Reduction Act—set the foundation for a new clean energy era. The congresswoman said these projects will not only protect the planet but also ensure good-paying jobs remain in New Jersey. She emphasized that the U.S. currently produces only 174 megawatts of offshore wind power but has the potential to expand production tenfold by 2030,” Sherrill said.
“We cannot let this opportunity go to waste, which is why I’m so committed to the expansion of clean energy. For years, I have worked alongside state and local partners as we’ve felt the impacts of climate change and extreme weather events like flooding, hurricanes, and extreme heat.
“Time and again, I hear from residents, businesses owners, and local leaders about the need for more climate resilient energy and infrastructure. Our towns and our families cannot — and should not — be the ones to foot the bill.”
She says the effort could bring thousands of union jobs, lower energy costs, and help fight climate change while maintaining New Jersey’s manufacturing and technology edge.
Federal and state support align
According to Sherrill, the Inflation Reduction Act represents the nation’s largest investment in clean energy, providing tax credits for electric vehicles, solar installations, and green technologies.
She also highlighted her bipartisan legislation to expand energy storage and promote renewable energy supply chains, along with support for the Energy Security and Independence Act. With Governor Phil Murphy’s commitment to wind expansion, she said the Garden State can become a national model for clean energy leadership.
“I have no doubt that when we combine Congress’s historic investments in clean energy, new federal regulations to increase grid expansion and transmission planning, and Governor Phil Murphy’s commitment to expanding offshore wind, we will be able to revolutionize the green energy industry,” she said.
Whales are just dying and it’s not from offshore wind construction
Addressing criticism from political opponents, Sherrill pushed back against claims linking wind turbine construction to marine life deaths including an abnormal spike in deaths since the start of surveying and construction.
She said such arguments were based on misinformation and that renewable energy will ultimately protect oceans and coastal ecosystems by reducing reliance on fossil fuels. She called on New Jerseyans to unite behind the state’s offshore wind plans and reject partisanship that could hinder progress.
