Myrtle Beach, SC – The Myrtle Beach Police Department is mourning the unexpected death of Officer Joseph Dawson, a veteran law enforcement officer and U.S. Coast Guard veteran who joined the department earlier this year.

Dawson, who was off duty at the time of his passing, was described by the department as a respected colleague and dedicated public servant.

He joined the Myrtle Beach Police Department in 2025 following an 18-year career with the New York State Police and six years of service in the United States Coast Guard.

Veteran officer’s legacy of service

Dawson relocated to Myrtle Beach in 2021, bringing with him decades of experience and a strong commitment to community engagement. Colleagues said his professionalism and compassion were immediately evident in his daily work and interactions.

Funeral arrangements have not yet been announced.
