New jersey to build massive stockpile of abortion pills ahead of trump presidency

TRENTON, N.J. — New Jersey Gov. Phil Murphy announced plans to stockpile abortion pills as part of a broader effort to safeguard reproductive rights amid growing concerns over federal abortion restrictions when former President Donald Trump returns to office.

Murphy revealed the state will begin accumulating supplies of Mifepristone, a widely used abortion pill, to ensure continued access to reproductive healthcare. This decision follows national debates over abortion access after the U.S. Supreme Court overturned Roe v. Wade in 2022.

“New Jersey worked proactively to protect abortion rights months before Roe was overturned,” Murphy said. “And now, we must further secure our reputation as a safe haven for reproductive freedom.”

Murphy also urged the state legislature to eliminate out-of-pocket costs for abortion procedures, thanking Senate Majority Leader Teresa Ruiz and Assemblywomen Shanique Speight and Lisa Swain for advancing the proposal.

“When it comes to protecting fundamental rights, I will not give an inch,” Murphy stated, emphasizing his commitment to maintaining reproductive healthcare access.

Murphy’s move positions New Jersey among states taking aggressive steps to defend abortion rights in anticipation of potential federal policy changes, even though President Trump has routinely stated his position that abortion is a state issue, not a federal issue.
