Distracted driving enforcement campaign in New Rochelle runs April 9–13 with fines and penalties
New Rochelle, NY – Drivers in New Rochelle can expect increased police presence on local roads this week as part of a nationwide effort targeting distracted driving, a leading cause of crashes and fatalities. The campaign, backed by federal and state safety officials, aims to curb dangerous behavior behind the wheel through enforcement and public awareness.
The New Rochelle Police Department announced its participation in the initiative, which runs from Wednesday through Sunday as part of National Distracted Driving Awareness Month. The effort is coordinated with the U.S. Department of Transportation’s National Highway Traffic Safety Administration.
Enforcement campaign targets phone use behind the wheel
“The U.S. Department of Transportation’s National Highway Traffic Safety Administration is reminding drivers that texting and other phone use behind the wheel is dangerous and illegal,” the department said. “From April 9–13, 2026, law enforcement nationwide will increase enforcement as part of the Put the Phone Away or Pay campaign during National Distracted Driving Awareness Month.”
Officials say distracted driving—particularly involving cell phones—remains a significant factor in serious and fatal crashes. Drivers caught violating the law during the campaign face fines and other penalties.
The department noted its continued involvement in New York State Governor’s Traffic Safety Campaigns, which focus on public education, outreach, youth programs, and safety messaging.
Police outline steps for safer driving
“Distracted driving, especially cell phone use, continues to contribute to serious and fatal crashes,” the department said. “Drivers who violate distracted-driving laws risk fines and penalties.”
Police are urging motorists to take simple precautions, including pulling over before using a phone, allowing passengers to handle communications, avoiding social media while driving, enabling “Do Not Disturb” mode, and keeping devices out of reach.
