Calvert County Residents Urged to Prevent Credit Card Skimming

by Local News Report May 9, 2024
By Local News Report

Prince Frederick, MD – The Calvert County Sheriff’s Office is advising individuals to take measures to safeguard themselves when using credit or debit cards at various retail locations, including ATMs and gas stations. Skimmers are illicit devices positioned above card reader slots to unlawfully capture personal details and PINs upon insertion.

Skimmers enable criminals to access PINs and encoded card data by placing them on machines and using covert cameras to record transactions. This pilfered information can be utilized to fabricate duplicated cards or breach bank accounts for monetary theft.

Individuals who suspect skimming devices should promptly inform store or bank management and alert law enforcement to any suspicious behavior. Authorities recommend regularly checking bank and card statements for any unauthorized charges. For further information on skimming, visit https://www.fbi.gov/scam…/common-scams-and-crimes/skimming.

Parolee Receives 10-Year Sentence for Drug Trafficking in Suffolk County

by Shore News Network May 9, 2024
By Shore News Network

SUFFOLK COUNTY, NY — Nathaniel Howell, 40, of Medford, has been sentenced to 10 years in prison for possession of significant quantities of cocaine, heroin, and fentanyl with intent to distribute. Suffolk County District Attorney Raymond A. Tierney announced the sentencing, highlighting Howell’s continued criminal activities while on parole.

Howell, who pleaded guilty in April to charges of Criminal Possession of a Controlled Substance in the Second Degree, was caught in November 2023 distributing narcotics from his Medford residence. The District Attorney’s Fentanyl Task Force, after executing a search warrant, recovered over 1.57 ounces of fentanyl and substantial amounts of heroin mixed with fentanyl, in addition to seizing over $305,000 in cash.

This conviction adds to Howell’s extensive criminal record, which includes seven prior felony convictions ranging from drug possession to weapon possession. The recent search mirrored a 2020 incident which also resulted in significant narcotic and firearm seizures from Howell’s home.

DA Tierney criticized the parole system for its ineffectiveness in monitoring parolees like Howell, who was on parole for prior drug and weapon offenses at the time of his latest crimes. Howell’s sentencing by Supreme Court Justice Richard Ambro on May 9 includes five years of post-release supervision, aiming to mitigate further community risk.

Suffolk Man Convicted of Kidnapping Ex-Girlfriend in Bay Shore, Taking Her to Brooklyn

by Shore News Network May 9, 2024
By Shore News Network

BAY SHORE, NY — Suffolk County District Attorney Raymond A. Tierney announced the conviction of Holmark Garces, 35, of Bay Shore, for kidnapping his ex-girlfriend and several related offenses. Garces was found guilty of kidnapping and other charges after a jury trial for abducting his ex-girlfriend at knifepoint and taking her to Brooklyn.

District Attorney Tierney praised the victim for her courage in testifying against Garces and acknowledged the efforts of law enforcement and prosecution teams involved in securing the conviction. The trial revealed that Garces had exhibited controlling and abusive behavior towards the victim, from whom he had separated in December 2019. This behavior persisted despite a stay away order of protection issued in November 2020.

The culmination of Garces’ actions occurred on October 12, 2022, when he forcibly abducted the victim from Brentwood, throwing her into his vehicle while armed with a kitchen knife. The incident, witnessed by bystanders and captured on surveillance, led to a police chase that ended with Garces’ arrest by NYPD officers in Brooklyn after he crashed into multiple police vehicles.

Garces was convicted on May 9, 2024, by Supreme Court Justice John B. Collins. The charges include second-degree kidnapping, criminal possession of a weapon, criminal contempt, menacing, and harassment. Additional charges related to the incident in Brooklyn are still pending.
