Biden Admin To Deploy Troops To Southern Border Amid Expected Migrant Surge

The Pentagon is sending a contingent of troops to the southern border to reinforce Customs and Border Protection (CBP) missions ahead of an expected surge in migrant entrances later this month, a U.S. official confirmed to the Daily Caller News Foundation.

The Department of Homeland Security requested the Pentagon’s assistance as Title 42, a Trump-era authority implemented in the wake of COVID-19 is scheduled to sunset on May 11, opening the way for thousands of migrants who would formerly be subject to expulsion to seek entry into the U.S. A temporary addition of 1,500 military personnel will mostly perform administrative tasks and will not conduct any law enforcement work, leaving that to CBP, the U.S. officials told the DCNF.

“At the request of DHS, DOD will provide a temporary increase of an additional 1,500 military personnel, for 90 days, to supplement CBP efforts at the border,” the official said. “These 1,500 military personnel will fill critical capability gaps, such as ground-based detection and monitoring, data entry, and warehouse support, until CBP can address these needs through contracted support.”

“They will not be doing any law enforcement work,” the official added.

The official did not say whether the troops would be drawn from active duty units or be called up from the Ready Reserve, but added that more details should become available soon. The

Secretary of State Antony Blinken and Department of Homeland Security (DHS) Secretary Alejandro Mayorkas laid out plans to accommodate the expected migrant surge on April 27, including expanded legal pathways for entering the U.S. and harsher penalties for attempting to enter illegally.

President Joe Biden also issued an executive order Thursday authorizing heads of the Department of Defense (DOD) and Department of Homeland Security (DHS) to call up reserve troops to active duty for anti-drug missions at the southwest border.

House Republicans introduced their border security bill Tuesday that seeks to restrict illegal immigration and increase law enforcement capabilities along the southern border.

The 213-page bill, known as the “Secure the Border Act of 2023,” includes construction of a wall along the southern border, additional personnel for U.S. Customs and Border Protection (CBP), and asylum reform. Republicans introduced the bill before an expected surge in illegal immigration at the southern border, when Title 42, the Trump-era public health order used to expel certain migrants, ends May 11.

The bill takes aim at the Biden administration’s program for migrants to apply for Title 42 exemption interviews for U.S. entry using the CBP One app and only authorizes its use solely for “inspection of perishable cargo.”

It also instructs the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) secretary to present a report within 60 days of the bill’s passage that determines whether or not the Mexican drug cartels meet the criteria to have a terrorist designation.

“The crisis at our Southern border is among the gravest threats to U.S. national security in our history. For the last two years, President Biden and his Administration have entirely neglected the escalating crisis at our border, and their lack of action has ceded all control to narco-terrorist cartels, who are now among the most powerful in deciding who comes into our country and at what price,” Republican Florida Rep. Mario Diaz-Balart, who is spearheading the bill with Republican California Rep. Tom McClintock, said in a statement Tuesday.

The bill would force more Border Patrol agents to perform law enforcement duties rather than spending their shifts working to process migrants by requiring CBP to have at least 22,000 agents.

“Not later than September 30, 2025, the Commissioner shall hire, train, and assign a sufficient number of Border Patrol agents to maintain an active duty presence of not fewer than 22,000 full-time equivalent Border Patrol agents, who may not perform the duties of processing coordinators,” the bill states.

Interior Secretary Deb Haaland repeatedly failed to answer questions from Republican Sen. Jim Risch of Idaho about a major wind project in the state, despite having previously promised Idaho lawmakers that she would learn more about the project, in a Senate Energy Committee hearing Tuesday.

“I’m gonna focus on one thing today, one thing and one thing only and that is the Lava Ridge wind turbine project in Idaho, have you heard of it?” asked Risch. “OK, you’ve heard of it because Congressman [Mike] Simpson, Congressman [Russ] Fulcher twice this year have raised it with you in hearings, is that right?

“Yes, I believe so,” said Haaland.

“They told me that at that time that you didn’t know anything about it, but that you were gonna look into it, is that a fair statement?” Risch asked, drawing another affirmative response from the secretary. “OK, so what’ve you found out?” he continued.

“The [Bureau of Land Management] has been engaged with stakeholders including the state, local, counties, grazing permittees, tribes and other federal agencies early on in the process. It’s coordinated with the Idaho Resource Advisory Council and the Lava Ridge Wind Project [Subcommittee] and the BLM has also coordinated with the [Interior Department’s] collaborative action and dispute resolution staff to engage stakeholders with ties to the Minidoka Historical Site.”

“That’s great!” the GOP senator responded. “What did you find out? With all this coordination and discussion and meetings.”

Haaland said that her department was continuing to engage with stakeholders before she was interrupted by Risch to again ask “[w]hat did you find out?” In total, Risch asked Haaland what she had learned about the project seven times, with Haaland failing to provide a direct response each time.

At one point, the secretary said that she did not have a “complete readout” of what the department knew, prompting the frustrated senator to interrupt her demanding that she “[g]imme an incomplete readout!” The line of questioning ended after nearly two minutes of back-and-forth, with Haaland saying she would “happy to update [Risch] as time goes on.”

The Lava Ridge project would be the second-largest wind farm in the U.S., producing roughly 1,000 megawatts and roughly doubling the total wind power produced in Idaho, according to The Associated Press.

The project has been fiercely opposed by a myriad of interests including local governments, ranchers and advocates for the Minidoka National Historic Site, which commemorates the more than 120,000 Japanese Americans forced into internment camps in the United States during World War 2, the AP reported. The Minidoka internment camp held more than 9,000 Japanese Americans over the course of the war.

An April 13 protest against the project drew hundreds of attendants, with protesters expressing frustration at topics ranging from the use of historic land, impacts on ranching, ecological impacts and the Bureau of Land Management’s alleged failure to properly engage with Spanish-speaking minorities, according to the AP. Janet Matsuoka Keegan — a board member of advocacy group Friends of Minidoka — had several family members who were imprisoned at the site’s internment camp, and told local news outlet KTVB that the project would “destroy that site” and “harm the experience” at Minidoka.

Risch later asked Haaland if she knew what the Minidoka National Historic Site is, and she first replied that she had never visited the site, before she was pressed to answer a second time by the senator.

“It’s an historical site,” said Haaland.

“Well, I mean, let me tell you what it’s a historical site for,” Risch said, throwing his hands up and laughing. “It was one of the detention sites during World War 2 for Japanese people, of which we have a significant population in Idaho. This land means a lot to them.”

Prior to Risch’s questioning, Haaland was also unable to identify the Democratic Republic of the Congo as the world’s leading cobalt producer when asked by Republican Sen. John Barrasso of Pennsylvania, who expressed concern that the Interior Department was not taking sufficient action to support mining of the mineral, which is critical to electric vehicle batteries. In a March hearing, Haaland was unwilling to say whether she preferred the U.S. produce its own oil and gas, instead of importing from foreign countries like Venezuela and Russia.

The American Civil Liberties Union (ACLU) of Rhode Island advised a school board that it has a “legal obligation” to keep student’s gender transitions a secret, according to a Monday letter.

The ACLU of Rhode Island warned the Smithfield School Committee, despite it being on the board’s meeting agenda, not to revisit the district’s “Transgender, Gender Non[con]forming, and Transitioning Students Policy,” which does not require educators to notify parents if a student has changed genders at school, according to a letter. The letter notes that several courts have found that a student’s right to privacy is above a parent’s right to the upbringing of their child, “specifically in the context of gender identity.”

“We believe that the Smithfield School Department has a legal obligation to maintain the privacy and safety of its students, including those who are lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, queer, or questioning,” the letter stated. “In addition, strong policy considerations dictate against violating the wishes of students who seek to keep their gender identity private. We urge you to retain RIDE’s [Rhode Island Department of Education] well-considered policy and avoid harming the students in your school with a policy that fails to abide by those guidelines. Thank you in advance for considering our views.”

The letter cites the federal Family Educational Rights and Privacy Act (FERPA) which protects the privacy of student’s education records. The National Association of Secondary School Principals has noted that disclosing a student’s gender identity to parents could result in a violation of FERPA, the letter said.

The Rhode Island Department of Education guidance suggests that schools are not required to notify parents of their child’s gender transition and students who do not want their parents to know will be assessed on a case-by-case basis, the letter stated. Smithfield’s policy is in accordance with the government guidance, the ACLU Rhode Island wrote in the letter.

In April, the school committee weighed changing the policy to require teachers to notify parents if their child has changed their gender identity, according to Uprise Rhode Island. The school committee also discussed requiring bathrooms to be used on the basis of biological sex rather than gender identity.

“In addition to these policy reasons for respecting a student’s right to keep their gender identity confidential, it is critical to emphasize that students maintain an independent constitutional right to privacy with respect to information about their sexual orientation or gender identity, and it violates that right to disclose that information without consent, even to a student’s parents or other school administrators,” the letter stated.

The ACLU of Rhode Island and the Smithfield School Committee did not immediately respond to the Daily Caller News Foundation’s request for comment.

Ruth Bader Ginsburg was fond of saying, “At the Supreme Court, those who know don’t talk, and those who talk don’t know.” RBG clearly underestimated what you were capable of, dear leaker.

Exactly one year ago, you chose to break your oath and trample your colleagues by stealing and releasing all 98 pages of Justice Alito’s Dobbs draft opinion, sending it to your comrades-in-leak at Politico. An action done in the dark. And a first for the Supreme Court, as no draft decision in modern history has been disclosed publicly while a case was pending.

The legacy you wanted was to coercively create the ruling of your choice. You knew you could count on the media deploying scare tactics and pro-abortion activists to riot and strike fear in the justices and their families. And so off you went.

Since you won’t speak directly to us and since we can’t rely on the authorities to find you, I will speak openly to you. And here’s what I have to say: Congratulations! Today we celebrate you, dear leaker, and the failure that you are.

However, even though you failed to achieve your goal, it doesn’t mean that your choice came without consequence. Your actions created cascading effects and lies that carry on to this day. So here is your real legacy: targeted violence.

It is not lost on me that the Ivy League college, that you undoubtedly attended, has a culture of casting out authorities that you don’t agree with. I suppose you thought you could transfer that way of thinking to your new gig at the Supreme Court. Well, you thought wrong.

Last week, Justice Alito admitted that your choice made he and his colleagues “targets of assassination.” The world witnessed this as protests broke out at the justice’s homes. Despite the orthodoxy of your Yales and Harvards, you deemed the justices and their families not worthy of safe spaces, not even in their homes … not even for their children. You knew that this leak would catch everyone off guard and not provide ample time for security, a casualty of ‘right fighting,’ you probably thought. And as a result, your actions flamed the fury of an assassination attempt at Justice Kavanaugh’s house,the assassin claiming he would be “shooting for three” justices that day.

Over 100 faith organizations, churches and pro-life centers were attacked nationwide as a direct result of your leak. We still see firebombing of pregnancy centers — places that provide resources to moms and their babies, who are making another choice outside of abortion. I suspect you are for choice — so why hinder theirs?

We’ve seen the FBI drink from your moralism kool-aid as they raid and arrest pro-lifers but somehow almost always miss the pro-abortion activist. Openly admitted by US Attorney General Garland who famously said he and his team are having a hard time catching abortion activists because they carry out their violence in the dark. I wonder who modeled that behavior for them? Oh, that’s right — you. Operating in the dark is your forte.

Dear leaker, one year later, I know you may be sitting in DC with your “hate has no home here” lawn sign whilst lighting your “RBG prayer candle” wondering what your legacy is. Well, wonder no more. I leave you at the same place I began — RBG. When asked about Roe v. Wade, Justice Ginsburg responded that it “ventured too far in the change it ordered and presented an incomplete justification for its action.” You see, even she knew Roe’s flaws.

But not you — you took matters into your own hands. What you couldn’t achieve with the law, you aimed to achieve outside of it. Today, we celebrate your failure. We celebrate that all your efforts proved not strong enough for the time-tested foundations of the U.S. Supreme Court and the resolve of the justices who serve on it.

Republican Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis signed legislation Tuesday to combat environmental, social and governance (ESG) from infiltrating the state’s financial businesses, according to a press release.

House Bill 3 holds that state and local financial decisions must be based solely on monetary factors, and not by way of ESG standards, which “inject[s] woke political ideology across the financial sector, placing politics above the fiduciary duty to make the best financial decisions for beneficiaries,” according to the press release. DeSantis enacted the law, protecting Floridians from “woke ideology” in the banking industry to ensure they won’t be denied loans based on ESG criteria.

“In Florida and across the nation, we’ve heard from law-abiding small business owners and consumers who’ve been denied access to financial services because of where they work or what they believe in,” DeSantis said in a statement. “Through this legislation, Florida will continue to lead the nation against big banks and corporate activists who’ve colluded to inject woke ideology into the global marketplace, regardless of the financial interests of beneficiaries.”

The legislation prohibits state and local governments from considering ESG factors when issuing bonds, disincentivizes banks from taking part in “corporate activism,” bars financial institutions from consulting “Social Credit Scores” when issuing loans and discriminating against customers for their political, religious or social ideology, according to the press release.

“Corporations have no right to bypass our democratic process. Companies that engage in ESG hurt their customers and the communities they serve, including Florida’s retirees, by making everything they produce more expensive,” Republican state House Speaker Paul Renner said in a statement. “ESG undermines our national security and bypasses our democratic process. I applaud Governor DeSantis for standing up to corporate titans who believe they are a law unto themselves and protecting Florida’s hardworking families.”

The governor led an 18-state alliance back in March that drew on initiatives from the then-proposed legislation to combat “woke” investment policies; the bill will “serve as a blueprint” for the other states to enact similar legislation, according to the press release.

Along with Florida, the Republican governors of Alabama, Alaska, Arkansas, Georgia, Idaho, Iowa, Mississippi, Missouri, Montana, Nebraska, New Hampshire, North Dakota, Oklahoma, South Dakota, Tennessee, Utah, West Virginia and Wyoming signed on to protect “Americans’ financial freedom.”

A left-wing Congressman is asking for a $1.4 million earmark that will fund an activism center for “social justice” in New York City.

Democratic Rep. Adriano Espaillat of New York, who represents parts of Manhattan and the Bronx, submitted a request for the funds to the House Appropriations Committee in advance of the markup for budgetary legislation. The money, intended for the “St. Luke AME Center for Peace and Social Justice,” would be used to fund a “co-working space for community organizations, and innovation labs for art and activism” in the space of an “historic police precinct,” according to Espaillat’s website.

The center, housed within a building run by St. Luke African Methodist Episcopal Church, is administered by the church’s local pastor, Rev. Stephen A. Green, who also chairs “Faith for Black Lives,” a group that espouses “racial justice” from a religious standpoint. That group’s website exhibits several social programs that it operates, such as “Shots for Tots,” a drive to vaccinate young children in minority communities against COVID-19, and a “Hunger Strike for Voting Rights” against GOP-led measures to reform voting laws in states.

Per the church’s Instagram page, it has hosted left-wing speakers such as the Rev. Al Sharpton, and has criticized the U.S. Supreme Court’s conservative majority for rulings that they claim have “failed America.” The church also called for “expanding the Supreme Court” to counter the “threats of fascism,” per its Instagram page. Green, the pastor, has also called for reparations for slavery, per its Facebook page.

The location of where the earmarked funds would be directed, moreover, is also the New York headquarters of WE ACT for Environmental Justice, a left-wing group seeking to counter “environmental racism” in North Manhattan and which has called for restrictions on the use of gas stoves, per its website. WE ACT’s executive director, Peggy Shepard, is the White House Environmental Justice Advisory Council Co-Chair within the Biden administration.

Espaillat’s proposal did not specify how $1.4 million was estimated as the cost of the work required, or justify how the project was related federal policy.

Espaillat is regarded as one of the most left-wing members of Congress, with a lifetime score of 98.68% according to Progressive Punch, a left-wing website, which also ranks him as the 11th most progressive member in Congress. He is also the first illegal immigrant to serve in Congress, having overstayed in the United States on a tourist visa starting in 1964, later becoming a permanent resident and U.S. citizen.

The use of earmarks in Congress, where spending is directed to a specific recipient as opposed to general allocations, is controversial among conservatives, who argue that the money leads to “pork-barrel spending” and fosters patron-client relationships between members and their districts without any public policy value. “Earmarks are the currency of corruption,” wrote Grover Norquist, a longtime fiscal conservative activist and president of Americans for Tax Reform.

The new Republican border security bill introduced Tuesday would bar migrants from using certain arrest warrants as identification at airports in order to travel via commercial airline flights.

The Daily Caller News Foundation first reported in January 2022 that the Transportation Security Administration (TSA) was allowing migrants to use certain administrative arrest warrants to travel. The revelation came in a letter TSA Administrator David Pekoske sent to Republican Texas Rep. Lance Gooden at the time, in which he disclosed that “Warrant for Arrest of Alien” and a “Warrant of Removal/Deportation” are considered acceptable forms of identification by the agency.

“If an individual presents a prohibited identification document to an officer of the Transportation Security Administration at an airport security checkpoint, the Administrator shall promptly notify the Director of U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement [ICE], the Director of U.S. Customs and Border Protection [CBP], and the head of the appropriate local law enforcement agency to determine whether the individual is in violation of any term of release from the custody of any such agency,” the bill states.

The administrative warrants are issued to people ICE believes should be removed from the country.

“TSA is committed to ensuring that all travelers, regardless of immigration status, are pre-screened before they arrive to the airport, have their pre-screening status and identification verified at security checkpoints, and receive appropriate screening based on risk before entering the sterile area of the airport,” Pekoske wrote to Gooden, adding that the migrants using the documents undergo enhanced screening.

The agency relies on CBP or ICE, which issue the documents to migrants, to verify that the name given for the documents “is the person whom the person claims to be.”

“TSA’s response confirms the Biden Administration is knowingly putting our national security at risk,” Gooden told the DCNF at the time. “Unknown and unvetted immigrants shouldn’t even be in the country, much less flying without proper identification.”

Between Jan. 1, 2021 and Oct. 31, 2021, the TSA’s National Transportation Vetting Center (NTVC) processed 45,577 non-citizens and non-U.S. nationals seeking validation of their DHS documents, 44,947 of which had their documents verified through the NTVC.

TSA used the CBP One application around 60,000 times between Jan. 1, 2021 and Oct. 31, 2021, the letter added.

Republican Sen. Josh Hawley of Missouri berated Biden-appointed Interior Secretary Deb Haaland for insinuating that workers should not be concerned about her department’s decision to block a major mining project because there were other blue collar jobs available.

The exchange occurred as the two discussed the Interior Department’s decision to impose a moratorium on mining in the Boundary Waters Area watershed in Minnesota, essentially killing the proposed Twin Metals mine, which would primarily extract copper and nickel, according to Reuters.

Haaland defended the decision on the grounds that the moratorium would protect “valuable” ecological resources, prompting Hawley to interject that jobs for blue collar workers and industrial independence from China were “valuable resources” before asking the secretary why those things were less important than the administration’s “radical” climate change agenda.

“Senator, I know that uh… there’s like 1.9 jobs for every American in the country right now, so I know there’s a lot of jobs…” said Haaland, before Hawley interrupted her.

“Wait a minute, you’re telling me – ” said Hawley, pausing mid-sentence to chuckle, “you’re telling me we’ve got too many jobs in the country?”

“Well I’m saying that we don’t have enough people, that’s why we’re having a hard time finding folks to work at our department,” Haaland responded.

“Wait, you’re telling me we have too many jobs for blue collar work; have you seen the number of jobs we have lost in this country to China in the last 20 years? Do you know where those jobs come from?” Hawley asked. “Over 3 million jobs have gone to China, do you know where those jobs have come from?”

“They are blue collar workers, and you’re sitting here telling me we have too many jobs in this country?” Hawley added. “Are you serious?”

Haaland responded that the agency was “working hard” and had processed 20 mine or mine modification permits since January 2021. The agency is “moving forward, we’re doing our jobs, we’re fulfilling our mission,” said Haaland, before she was again interrupted again by Hawley, who said the department was “moving backward” by denying permits and shutting down mines.

“[Y]ou’re sitting here telling me: ‘We’ve got too many jobs in this country, we got gobs of jobs in this country, we don’t need any more jobs in this country,’” Hawley continued. “I wanna take the strongest possible exception to that comment and to that entire mentality … which is when it comes to blue collar workers in this country: ‘You’re on your own … Just shut up and go get a job at McDonald’s y’know? Whatever.’ … I mean Good Lord, that is extraordinary! What an extraordinary response!”

Former Minneapolis Police Officer Found Guilty Of Aiding Murder Of George Floyd

Tou Thao, a former Minneapolis police officer, was found guilty of his role in the murder of George Floyd in May 2020, according to court documents.

Hennepin County Judge Peter Cahill announced the decision late Monday night, stating that Thao was guilty of aiding and abetting second-degree manslaughter and that his sentencing will take place on August 7, according to court documents. The conviction of Thao happened three years after Floyd’s death, which sparked violent nationwide protests lasting for several months.

On May 25, 2020, four police officers restrained Floyd while former Minneapolis Police Officer Derek Chauvin pressed his knee into Floyd’s neck, making it difficult for Floyd to breathe. Chauvin was eventually charged with, and convicted of, second-degree murder, among other charges.

Thao was one of three other police officers charged with depriving Floyd of his civil rights while “failing to render medical assistance,” according to court documents.

While Thao didn’t physically restrain Floyd, he “encouraged his colleagues’ dangerous prone restraint of Floyd while holding back a crowd of conferred bystanders begging the officers to render medical aid,” according to court documents. Moreover, Thao seemed aware of Floyd’s inability to respond and that he had stopped showing any sign of vitality.

Thao also prevented “an off-duty Minneapolis firefighter from rendering the medical aid Floyd so desperately needed” and retrieved a device known as hobble that could have helped save Floyd’s life, according to the court documents.

“Thao’s actions were even more unreasonable in light of the fact he was under a duty to intervene to stop the other officers’ excessive use of force and was trained to render medical aid,” the documents stated.

A joint team of U.S. and international law enforcement officials conducted a global operation to disrupt the darknet trafficking of fentanyl, resulting in record seizures and arrests, according to a Tuesday Department of Justice (DOJ) press release.

The DOJ’s Joint Criminal Opioid and Darknet Enforcement (JCODE) team conducted year-long targeting of fentanyl and opioid trafficking on the darknet that crossed three continents. The global operation resulted in over 100 prosecutions throughout 30 federal districts, according to the press release.

The JCODE’s “Operation SpecTor” resulted in 288 arrests, the seizure of 117 firearms, 850 kilograms of drugs with 64 kilograms of fentanyl or fentanyl-laced drugs included, and over $53 million in currency. The law enforcement operatives came from multiple U.S. federal agencies, including the Department of Homeland Security (DHS), Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA), DOJ, and multiple additional agencies, including international counterparts, according to the press release.

“The illicit movement of opioids poses a significant threat to public health and safety – whether by known transnational criminal gang members across international borders or anonymously through darknet spaces,” said P.J. Lechleitner, the acting deputy director of DHS’ Homeland Security Investigations (HSI), in the release. “Our HSI special agents, alongside federal and international partners, continue to aggressively investigate, disrupt, and dismantle networks responsible for trafficking dangerous, deadly narcotics and other contraband across global communities we are charged with protecting. We will continue to pursue bad actors engaged in these crimes to ensure they face justice, while protecting victims from these lethal substances.”

“Our coalition of law enforcement authorities across three continents proves that we all do better when we work together,” said Catherine De Bolle, the executive director of the European Union Agency for Law Enforcement Cooperation (Europol). “This operation sends a strong message to criminals on the dark web: international law enforcement has the means and the ability to identify and hold you accountable for your illegal activities, even on the dark web.”

The joint effort relied on intelligence from the JCODE and Europol’s European Cybercrime Centre (EC3) to identify darknet drug vendors and buyers, including the Mexican cartels, according to the press release.

“The Sinaloa and Jalisco drug cartels and the global networks they operate are killing Americans by sending fentanyl into the United States. Their associates distribute this fentanyl into communities across America by every means possible, including the dark web,” said Anne Milgram, DEA administrator, according to the press release.

During Tuesday’s Senate Judiciary Committee hearing on Supreme Court ethical standards, Republicans took a look back at Democrats’ history of threatening and attempting to indimidate the Supreme Court, spanning back to the smearing of Justice Clarence Thomas with unfounded allegations of sexual harassment during his confirmation hearing.

Republican Louisiana Sen. John Kennedy read aloud the words then-Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer spoke on the Supreme Court steps in 2020, addressing Justices’ Neil Gorsuch and Brett Kavanaugh by name to warn them they have “released the whirlwind” and “will pay the price” if they “go forward with these awful decisions.” Multiple senators pointed out that Democrats have indeed released a “whirlwind” against the Supreme Court, threatening to pack the Court and trying to force them to change how they operate by imposing new ethics standards.

“Wow, just wow,” Kennedy said after reading Schumer’s statement. “I think Matthew 12:36 is correct, ‘For by thy words you shall be justified, and by thy words you shall be condemned.’”

Kennedy continued to note how Democrats’ actions have aggravated heightened tensions after the Dobbs decision leak, which led to protests outside conservative justices’ homes, an assassination attempt on Kavanaugh and the publication of the location of Justice Amy Coney Barrett’s children’s school.

Republican Texas Sen. John Cornyn later played a video from Thomas’ confirmation hearing in 1991, drawing a parallel between then and now.

Anita Hill claimed Thomas sexually harassed her while she worked for him at the Department of Education, which the White House said was unfounded after an investigation.

“[This] is a high-tech lynching for uppity blacks who in any way deign to think for themselves, to do for themselves, to have different ideas, and it is a message that unless you kowtow to an old order, this is what will happen to you,” Thomas said during his confirmation hearing. “You will be lynched, destroyed, caricatured by a committee of the U.S. — U.S. Senate, rather than hung from a tree.”

Tuesday’s hearing was prompted by reports alleging Justice Clarence Thomas violated ethics rules by not disclosing vacations he took with his friend and billionaire Harlan Crow, which Thomas said colleagues told him was not reportable as “personal hospitality” from a close friend.

Liberal justices have taken actions that would have been criticized if they were conservative, multiple senators noted.

Sonia Sotomayor amended her financial disclosures to include trips paid for by a third-party, and Justice Jackson noted on her nominee disclosure that she previously omitted information about consulting income her spouse “periodically receives from consulting on medical malpractice cases.” In 2010, Justice Ruth Bater Ginsburg accepted an award from the Woman’s National Democratic Club.

In a 2019 amicus brief cited by Republican Utah Sen. Mike Lee, Democratic Senators Sheldon Whitehouse of Rhode Island, Mazie K. Hirono of Hawaii, Richard Blumenthal of Connecticut, Dick Durbin of Illinois and Kirsten Gillibrand of New York said the Supreme Court “is not well.”

“And the people know it,” the senators wrote. “Perhaps the Court can heal itself before the public demands it be ‘restructured in order to reduce the influence of politics.’”

“They aren’t getting their way, so they want to change the rules,” Kennedy said. “But the constitution is in the game…The constitutional separation of powers means that no branch of the federal government can dictate how another should govern itself as black letter law.”

Democratic New York Gov. Kathy Hochul signed a legislation package on Tuesday that will require public universities provide abortion pills on campus, according to her press release.

The new law requires City University of New York (CUNY) and State University of New York (SUNY) campuses employ or contract individuals authorized to prescribe abortion pills, or inform students of and refer them to providers, the press release reads. It ensures college students are able to access medical abortion “where they live, work, and spend their free time” and intends to “reduce the load on external clinics throughout New York.”

“As anti-choice extremists and judges continue to roll back abortion rights across the country, we are fighting back here in New York,” Hochul said in the press release. “I am proud to sign these landmark pieces of legislation that protect and expand access to abortion and reproductive health care. Under my watch, I will continue to ensure that New York remains a safe harbor for those in need of care.”

The bills, sponsored by Democratic state Sen. Cordell Cleare and Democratic Assemblymember Harvey Epstein, target college-aged students because they are “the age group most likely to seek abortion care,” the press release reads. It asserts abortion pills are “highly safe and effective and have been an important component of abortion care for decades.”

“The Pro-Life Generation is labeled by Governor Hochul as ‘anti-choice extremists’ for opposing the deadly distribution of Chemical Abortion Pills that subject women to injury, infertility, death, and abuse,” Kristan Hawkins, Students for Life Action president, told the Daily Caller News Foundation. “If the Governor and female members of New York’s legislature truly cared about women’s health, and the status of our environment that is negatively impacted by Chemical Abortion Pills and chemically-tainted blood, tissue, and fetal remains being flushed into the water, they would not support the drugs getting into the hands of vulnerable young women studying at college.”

John B. King Jr., SUNY chancellor, and Félix V. Matos Rodríguez, CUNY chancellor, praised the legislation in prepared statements, according to the press release. Students and lawmakers rallied in support of the bill in December 2022 near Barnard College — a private college that already pledged it would stock abortion pills on campus by the fall 2023 semester.

“As our nation continues to grapple with a changed landscape in which reproductive rights are being stripped away, we recognize that it is members of underserved groups who are the most adversely impacted,” Rodríguez said. “This legislation protects CUNY students by ensuring that they have access to reproductive health care, which will enable them to prioritize their education and make choices that are consistent with their life goals.”

Hochul also signed legislation that will make hormonal birth control accessible over the counter to expand access to those without a primary care provider, the press release read.

SUNY, CUNY, Cleare, Epstein and Hochul did not immediately respond to the DCNF’s request for comment.

Nordstrom, a major clothing retailer, is closing two of its San Francisco locations, citing a “deteriorating situation,” downtown, a reference to heightened crime and vagrancy in the area, according to the San Francisco Standard.

Nordstrom announced it will not be renewing its lease at the location in Westfield Mall and a downtown Nordstrom Rack. Collectively, these locations represent about 357,500 square feet, reported the San Francisco Standard.

“The planned closure of Nordstrom underscores the deteriorating situation in downtown San Francisco,” said a spokesperson for the mall,” said a spokesperson for the mall. “A growing number of retailers and businesses are leaving the area due to the unsafe conditions for customers, retailers, and employees, coupled with the fact that these significant issues are preventing an economic recovery of the area,” they said.

San Francisco has been experiencing heightened crime, homelessness, and public vagrancy, causing many businesses to retreat, according to the California Globe. The rise in crime spurred the city to bump police pay by 10%, with the hope of retaining and recruiting officers, according to the San Francisco Chronicle.

Nordstrom joins the roughly 20 businesses that have left the downtown San Francisco area in the past three years, according to the San Francisco Standard. Whole Foods temporarily shuttered their downtown location on April 10, attributing their decision to “high theft and hostile visitors.”

Nordstrom and San Francisco Mayor London Breed’s Office did not immediately respond to Daily Caller News Foundation’s request for comment.

Regional bank stocks declined on Tuesday following the collapse of First Republic Bank the day prior, the second-largest bank failure in U.S. history and the third major lender to fall this year.

PacWest Bancorp and Western Alliance Bancorporation shares were down 20% late Tuesday, while shares of Zions Bancorporation, Comerica Incorporated and KeyCorp declined about 10%. Federal regulators took ownership of the regional bank First Republic and sold it to banking giant JPMorgan Chase on Monday; CEO Jamie Dimon expressed optimism about the banking sector, stating that he believed a significant portion of the banking crisis has ended. 

“There are only so many banks that were offsides this way,” Dimon said in a call following the takeover announcement, according to CNBC. “There may be another smaller one, but this pretty much resolves them all. This part of the crisis is over.”

Rising interest rates can pose a challenge for regional banks as it makes it more expensive to retain deposits and reduces the value of particular bonds and loans, according to CNBC. These concerns were a contributing factor to the deposit run on Silicon Valley Bank (SVB) in March, which quickly spread to Signature Bank, resulting in the collapse of both financial institutions.

President Joe Biden said the FDIC and JPMorgan Chase’s agreement will “make sure the banking system is safe and sound,” in remarks delivered at a National Small Business Week event on Monday. “That includes protecting small businesses across the country who need to make payroll for workers and their small businesses,” he added.

America’s 25 largest banks received $120 billion in deposits following the collapse and bailouts of SVB and Signature in March, while deposits at smaller banks fell by $108 billion, according to The Wall Street Journal.

The regional banks will be a topic of concern this week when the Federal Reserve Board meets to decide whether or not to continue to raise interest rates. Despite the regional bank crisis, “I am still anticipating the Fed hiking rates,” E.J. Antoni, research fellow for Regional Economics at the Heritage Foundation’s Center for Data Analysis, told the Daily Caller News Foundation.

Democratic Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez of New York called on California Democratic Sen. Dianne Feinstein to resign on Tuesday after her prolonged absence in the chamber due to a shingles infection.

Ocasio-Cortez said Feinstein, who sits on the Senate Judiciary Committee, “should retire,” as her absence has hindered the Senate Democrats’ ability to carry out the confirmation process, she wrote in a Bluesky social media post per CNN. Ocasio-Cortez joined several of her House Democratic colleagues in calling for resignation, including Reps. Ro Khanna of California and Dean Phillips of Minnesota, as well as Rashida Tlaib of Michigan.

“Her refusal to either retire or show up is causing great harm to the judiciary – precisely where repro rights are getting stripped. That failure means now in this precious window Dems can only pass GOP- approved nominees,” Ocasio-Cortez said in the post.

Ocasio-Cortez responded to Republican Sens. Joni Ernst of Iowa and Marsha Blackburn of Tennessee after they came to Feinstein’s defense, where they said the calls for resignation were “sexist” and “ageist,” according to Axios.

“I think criticisms of that stance as ‘anti-feminist’ are a farce,” Ocasio-Cortez said in the post.

Because Sen. Feinstein was absent, Republicans are passing legislation through the Senate, undermining the right of our residents to breathe clean air.

Amid the calls for her resignation, Feinstein asked Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer on April 12 if she could temporarily step down and be replaced on the Senate Judiciary Committee until she fully recovers from shingles; Feinstein has been absent since February.

“I understand that my absence could delay the important work of the Judiciary Committee,” Feinstein said. “So I’ve asked Leader Schumer to ask the Senate to allow another Democratic senator to temporarily serve until I’m able to resume my committee work.”

Feinstein did not immediately respond to the Daily Caller News Foundation’s request for comment.

Exclusive-Biden, Harris planning 1st 2024 fundraisers as soon as next week

WASHINGTON (Reuters) -U.S. President Joe Biden and Vice President Kamala Harris are gearing up for their first fundraising events as soon as next week to help kick off their 2024 reelection campaign, according to people briefed on the plans.

Some of the events being planned for Biden include a reception and dinner that could take place in New York City on May 10, the people said.

The final dates for the events could change and the president’s schedule was not finalized as he deals with a debt limit crisis in Washington and a diplomatic trip to the Asia-Pacific region in two weeks.

Harris, meanwhile, is being scheduled for what will likely be her own first fundraising event for the campaign on May 12 in the key swing state of Georgia, according to a person familiar with the matter. She was already scheduled to be in Atlanta for a previously announced event benefiting the state Democratic Party.

The Biden campaign declined to comment.

While Biden has largely focused on his presidential duties since announcing his bid for re-election, his campaign operation is coming to life.

The first events being planned for Biden are designed to be intimate, small-group functions of fewer than 40 high-dollar donors, and are expected to generate some $2.5 million for Biden, according to the sources.

The money is helping the campaign get an early start on building an audience of voters and potential donors online. They’ve already spent $767,000 on Meta Platforms Inc’s Facebook and $246,000 on Alphabet Inc-owned Google, according to those companies.

Biden’s campaign in 2020 was the first presidential campaign in history to raise over $1 billion, as he battled incumbent Republican Donald Trump.

His campaign team and Democratic National Committee (DNC) allies expect they may need more this time to reelect Biden, hold the Senate and regain control of the House of Representatives, which Republicans took in the 2022 midterm elections.

“You raised more money for me last time than I raised in my whole life,” Biden told top volunteer fundraisers for his campaign last week in Washington. “It’s because of you I’m standing here, and it’s going to be because of you we win this next time around.”

NYSE to delist First Republic Bank shares

(Reuters) – The New York Stock Exchange said on Tuesday it will delist shares of First Republic Bank, the lender that was seized by regulators before JPMorgan Chase & Co acquired most of its assets.

Apart from the company’s common stock, seven different types of its preferred stock will also be delisted. Trading in all the shares will be suspended immediately, the exchange said.

First Republic was acquired by Merrill Lynch in 2007. But it was listed on the stock market again in 2010 after being sold by Merrill’s new owner Bank of America Corp, following the 2008 financial crisis.

At its peak, in November 2021, the bank was valued at over $40 billion.

California regulators on Monday seized First Republic and put it into Federal Deposit Insurance Corp receivership, marking the third major U.S. bank failure in two months and the largest since Washington Mutual in 2008.

JPMorgan took control of most of the San Francisco-based bank’s assets and all of its deposits.

US Senate Republicans, Democrats squabble over debt ceiling as deadline nears

WASHINGTON (Reuters) – Top U.S. Senate Republicans on Tuesday called on President Joe Biden to accept their party’s debt-ceiling package or make a counter-offer, while a top Democrat said the Senate might try to advance a “clean” debt-ceiling hike next week.

With barely a month to go before a possible catastrophic U.S. default, leaders of both parties hardened their standoff over the $31.4 trillion debt ceiling. Republicans in the Senate said Democrats needed to take seriously Speaker Kevin McCarthy’s legislation that passed the House of Representatives along party lines last week.

“You’ve got a choice between accepting the House bill or entering a discussion,” Senate Republican leader Mitch McConnell told reporters.

Senator John Thune, McConnell’s top lieutenant, told reporters that there is strong support for the House legislation. “Everybody wants to see us succeed, and that means getting some legitimate, meaningful reforms as part of this process,” he said.

Democratic Senator Chuck Schumer leads a 51-49 majority, but would need the support of at least nine Republicans to pass a bill lifting the debt ceiling without conditions.

House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries on Tuesday said his caucus was preparing a possible way to maneuver around Republican opposition, but that tactic could work only if the Senate passed a bill of its own.

Treasury Secretary Janet Yellen informed Congress on Monday that the U.S. government will be unable to meet all its obligations “potentially as early as June 1” unless lawmakers act on the debt ceiling.

Soon afterward, Biden invited McCarthy, Schumer, McConnell and Jeffries to a White House meeting on May 9.

Schumer then began navigating a bill that would suspend the debt ceiling until December 2024 without conditions through the Senate, while the White House said Biden would “stress that Congress must take action to avoid default without conditions.”

McConnell dismissed the idea of a Senate debt ceiling bill, saying a resolution would have to come from McCarthy and Biden. “There is no solution in the Senate,” he said.

Schumer told reporters that he would wait until next week’s White House meeting before deciding how to move forward.

“We have to stand firm,” the top Senate Democrat said. “I look forward to the president explaining in the meeting to the speaker directly the harm that he proposes to cause and I hope it’ll cause cooler heads to prevail.”

The failure of Congress to act on the debt ceiling would result in a catastrophic first-ever U.S. default that could cripple the nation’s economy and unsettle world global financial markets.

New U.S. military aid to Ukraine to include air-launched rockets -sources

WASHINGTON (Reuters) – The United States plans to announce as soon as Wednesday a new $300 million military aid package for Ukraine that will for the first time include a short-range air-launched rocket, two U.S. officials said.

The Hydra 70 is an air-launched unguided rocket made by General Dynamics. The rockets are typically launched from pods attached to aircraft.

The rockets could help Ukraine weaken Russian ground positions and provide advancing Ukrainian ground forces with air support as Kyiv plans a spring offensive.

The package includes 155-mm Howitzer cannons, according to the officials who spoke on condition of anonymity.

In addition, HIMARS and Howitzer cannon ammunition, TOW anti-tank missiles and mortars will be sent, the officials said.

Demolition equipment and trucks are another part of the package, they said. They warned the package was still being finalized and could change.

The package would be funded using Presidential Drawdown Authority, or PDA, which authorizes the president to transfer articles and services from U.S. stocks without congressional approval during an emergency. The material will come from U.S. excess inventory.

The security assistance package would be the 37th approved by the United States for Ukraine since the Russian invasion in February 2022, for a total of nearly $36 billion. It comes as Congress and the White House squabble over how best to avoid a catastrophic default on the nation’s debt, with many Republicans demanding sharp cuts in domestic spending in exchange for lifting the debt limit.

However, members of both parties insist they support continued aid for Ukraine including top Republicans House Speaker Kevin McCarthy and Mitch McConnell, the top Republican in the Senate.

Mexican President Lopez Obrador to meet with Biden adviser Tuesday

MEXICO CITY (Reuters) – Mexican President Andres Manuel Lopez Obrador will meet with White House Homeland Security adviser Elizabeth Sherwood-Randall Tuesday morning in Mexico, Lopez Obrador’s office confirmed on Monday.

The Mexican leader said earlier Monday he would meet with a representative for U.S. President Joe Biden to discuss migration, without saying who.

On May 11, the U.S. is scheduled to lift a COVID health policy known as “Title 42” that has allowed it to rapidly return migrants from the southern border back to Mexico.

The policy has increased pressure on Mexico’s migration detention system, but its impending end, migrant advocates warn, could sharply boost the number of migrants attempting to cross the border and lead the U.S. to lean on Mexico for tighter controls.

(Reuters) – Shares of major U.S. regional banks fell further on Tuesday in the aftermath of the collapse of First Republic Bank, the largest U.S. bank failure since the 2008 financial crisis.

JPMorgan Chase & Co on Monday bought a majority of First Republic Bank’s assets.

Here is what analysts are saying about the sell-off in regional banks:

“If a ‘confidence crisis’ can happen to First Republic, it can happen to any bank in this country.”

“First Republic bank failure means unfortunately that the other ‘so called’ troubled regional banks should probably continue to sleep with one eye open.”

“It’s a continuation of fears that were ongoing from yesterday. Debt ceiling fears is also impacting markets overall today.”

We still have an increasingly weaker consumer and by and large, to assume that these complicated issues from a banking standpoint have been sorted out in their entirety is a somewhat early conclusion and I believe that’s what people are waking up to today.

“Layoffs are starting to continue to take hold. First, we saw layoffs in the tech pace, and then you started seeing that happen in the banks and what you saw throughout the pandemic era was that banks had largely held off in laying people off because they needed people. You’re starting to see some of these bigger banks and investment boutiques saying that they don’t have the necessary work for this number of people that were employing.”

“When you just kind of mix it into the ingredients of everything else that people are concerned about, it gives investors one more reason to hit the exits for the day at least. It seems to be just a good old-fashioned risk-off day.”

PHIL BLANCATO, CEO of LADENBURG THALMANN ASSET MANAGEMENT:

“The concern is it seems almost a guarantee that the Fed’s going to hike 25 basis points tomorrow, and now the selloff in the banking sector is reflective of that much more pressure on any bank that has long-dated assets like the three banks that failed.”

“But I’m of the view that it is a bit overdone simply because the market is reflecting lower interest rates now than we did a few months back. Some of the pressure on the balance sheets is better. The Fed programs of providing liquidity is working and some of the bigger banks like JPMorgan can step in when necessary to either buy or rescue a bank.”

“Banks are somewhat reluctant to seek help because they’re being faced with closure. We are in this sort of waiting period here. The reason why the market sold off is the threat of higher interest rates would make the situation worse, but I don’t think that the threat is going to be a reality. I would hope that any bank that does source liquidity would not run into a scenario where it must close because the federal government has prudently either found a buyer or provided liquidity to make it work.”

“There certainly are enough signs suggesting that interest rates, inflation, core inflation are all coming down, rents and wages still being a bit high. But the trend suggests to them that they’re closer to the end of monetary policy tightening and probably one or two rate hikes to go tomorrow, maybe one more in June. Then I think we’ll get rather a significant relief rally. Nothing to the tune of adding 5% or 6% on the S&P 500 because we’ve come too far, too fast already.”

THOMAS HAYES, CHAIRMAN AND MANAGING MEMBER AT GREAT HILL CAPITAL:

“It’s not what changed, it’s what hasn’t changed since the failure of Silicon Valley Bank and what hasn’t changed is the executive branch, which has the power to do so, has not woken up to the fact that there needs to be an increased deposit insurance. Otherwise, you’re gonna wind up with four to five major banks and the rest are going to be impaired if not consolidated. Until the executive branch steps up and does a temporary backstop of deposit or an increase in the insurance levels until Congress can actually pass a bill, you’re gonna see this type of uncertainty around banks. Then you have the Fed tomorrow that has been tone-deaf to the message of the market for many months now.”

“You can no longer blame management when the only common denominator is the Fed with the steepest hiking cycle in over 45 years. The message the market is sending today is the Fed needs to come out with the press conference and pause tomorrow, otherwise you’re going to see continued turmoil in the in the banking system. Every 25 basis points they hike impairs the portfolios of banks. So the more they tighten the more banks are gonna get pushed into receivership.”

Group of EU states seeks to reduce dependency on China for pharmaceuticals

BRUSSELS (Reuters) – A group of 19 European Union member states are pushing for measures to reduce the bloc’s dependency on Chinese imports of pharmaceutical ingredients, a paper dated May 2 showed.

The move comes a week after the European Commission proposed an overhaul of the legislation governing its 136 billion euro ($148 billion) pharmaceuticals industry.

The Commission’s proposed bill aims to revive investment, reduce shortages and boost access to affordable drugs at a time when health budgets have been drained by the costs of treating COVID-19.

However, the countries backing the paper – including Belgium, France, Spain and Germany – want the EU to take more “drastic steps” to shore up Europe’s security of supply for vital drug ingredients with a Critical Medicines Act.

The countries are concerned about the global reliance on China for key ingredients and a handful of manufacturers. Less than five sites manufacture more than 50% of the ingredients that meet European standards.

“The EU is becoming increasingly dependent on imports from a few manufacturers and regions…In 2019, globally more than 40% of APIs (Active pharmaceutical ingredients) were sourced from China,” the paper said.

“Furthermore, almost all API producers depend on China for intermediate inputs.”

The Commission is aiming to put a list of critical medicines that will require more monitoring to ensure shortages are avoided across the bloc.

“For these medicines, the supply must be monitored, the global value chains must be mapped and (potential) suppliers and vulnerabilities identified,” the paper said.

The list should start with those medications that have repeatedly been in short supply, it said.

The countries would also like to see measures that allow EU member states to rely on each other in “extreme cases where no alternative suppliers or medicines can be found”.

Oil slumps 5% to five-week low amid US debt default fears

NEW YORK (Reuters) -Oil prices sank about 5% to a five-week low on Tuesday on concerns about the economy as U.S. politicians discuss ways to avoid a debt default and investors prepare for more rate hikes this week.

Brent futures fell $3.99, or 5.0%, to settle at $75.32 a barrel, while West Texas Intermediate crude (WTI) fell $4.00, or 5.3%, to end at $71.66.

That was the lowest close for both benchmarks since March 24 and was also their biggest one-day percentage declines since early January.

Oil prices and Wall Street’s main indexes both fell after U.S. Treasury Secretary Janet Yellen said the government could run out of money within a month.

The White House said President Joe Biden would not negotiate over the debt ceiling during his meeting with four top congressional leaders on May 9, but he will discuss starting “a separate budget process.”

U.S. job openings fell for a third straight month in March and layoffs increased to the highest level in more than two years, suggesting some softening in the labor market that could aid the Federal Reserve’s fight against inflation.

“The U.S. economy continues to evolve in a manner consistent with a recession commencing later this year,” analysts at Barclays, a bank, said in a note.

“The manufacturing sector is contracting, the consumer is struggling, … There are broadening signs of cracks emerging within the labor market,” Barclays said.

Later this week, investors will look for market direction from expected interest rate hikes by central banks still fighting inflation. More hikes could slow economic growth and dent energy demand.

The U.S. Federal Reserve is expected to increase interest rates by another 25 basis points on Wednesday.

The European Central Bank is also expected to raise rates at its regular policy meeting on Thursday.

“The … action of central banks in their mission to tame elevated consumer and producer prices … all cast a rather long shadow of doubt on prospects going forward,” oil broker PVM’s Tamas Varga said.

Concerns about diesel demand in recent months, meanwhile, has pressured U.S. heating oil futures to their lowest level since December 2021.

“Oil basically has weakening prospects from the world’s two largest economies, China and the U.S., and if the macro backdrop deteriorates momentum selling could easily send prices below the $70 level,” said Edward Moya, senior market analyst at data and analytics firm OANDA.

Over the weekend, data from China, the world’s top crude importer, showed manufacturing activity fell unexpectedly in April. That was the first contraction in the manufacturing purchasing managers’ index since December.

IRAN OIL OUTPUT RISING

On the supply side, Iran’s oil production surpassed 3 million barrels per day (bpd), its oil minister said. The OPEC member, which has been under U.S. sanctions since 2018, pumped 2.4 million bpd on average in 2021.

The market shrugged off news that the Organization of the Petroleum Exporting Countries’ output fell in April, as sanctioned countries Russia and Iran continued to find outlets for their crude.

Meanwhile, U.S. crude stockpiles were forecast to have drawn down for a third week in a row for the first time since December, falling some 1.1 million barrels last week, according to analysts in a Reuters poll. [EIA/S] [EIA/A]

The poll was conducted ahead of reports from the American Petroleum Institute, due at 4:30 p.m. EDT on Tuesday and the U.S. Energy Information Administration (EIA) at 10:30 a.m. EDT on Wednesday.

As counteroffensive looms, Ukraine vows not to give up Bakhmut

KYIV (Reuters) -Ukraine’s military vowed on Tuesday not to give up the pulverised eastern city of Bakhmut as it prepares to launch a long-promised counteroffensive against Russian forces.

General Oleksandr Syrskyi, commander of ground forces, underlined the importance Kyiv attaches to holding Bakhmut as preparations continue for a counterattack which it hopes will change the dynamic of the war.

The battle has symbolic importance for both sides, with Ukraine still holding on to some parts of the city after months of fierce fighting against regular Russian troops and the Wagner mercenary force.

“Together with the commanders, we have made a number of necessary decisions aimed at ensuring the effective defence and inflicting maximum losses on the enemy,” Syrskyi said in remarks released after a visit to troops in Bakhmut.

“We will continue, despite all the forecasts and advice, to hold Bakhmut, destroying Wagner and other most combat-capable units of the Russian army,” he said.

Syrskyi said on Monday Ukrainian units had ousted Russian forces from some positions in Bakhmut.

Ukrainian deputy defence minister Hanna Malyar said control of some parts of Bakhmut was changing hands.

“There are positions lost, and positions we are driving the enemy out of. Fierce fighting continues – as of now, the city is controlled by our armed forces,” she told the WeUkraine television channel.

Wagner units advanced up to 160 metres (yards) in some directions on Tuesday, founder Yevgeny Prigozhin said on the Telegram messaging app, repeating claims that Ukrainian forces now control less than three sq km (1.2 sq miles) of Bakhmut.

Prigozhin also repeated his complaints that Moscow was not supplying his forces with enough ammunition.

Reuters was unable to verify the battlefield situation.

Russia sees Bakhmut, once home to 70,000 people, as a stepping stone to attacking other Ukrainian cities.

The White House said on Monday Russia had exhausted its military stockpiles and armed forces, with some 100,000 Russian troops killed or wounded in Ukraine in the past five months, based on U.S. intelligence estimates.

Reuters was unable to independently verify the White House figures.
