Oxon Hill, MD – A Powerball ticket worth $50,000 was sold in Prince George’s County for Wednesday night’s drawing, as the multi-state jackpot continues to rise, now sitting at an estimated $482 million.

The winning ticket, which matched four of the five white balls plus the red Powerball, was purchased at Eastover Liquors located at 4909 Indian Head Highway in Oxon Hill. It is the 18th third-tier Powerball prize sold in Maryland so far this year.

TRENTON, NJ – A bill in New Jersey is seeking to give comprehensive NJ FamilyCare coverage to pregnant undocumented immigrants and their babies under one year old. That bill has stalled in the legislature, but Democrats in the state are still pushing the idea.

The measure, sponsored by Assemblymen Sterley S. Stanley (D-Middlesex) and Gabriel Rodriguez (D-Hudson), with Assemblywoman Reynolds-Jackson (D-Mercer) as co-sponsor, would expand eligibility beyond the emergency-only care currently allowed under state and federal law. Pregnant undocumented residents would receive full benefits until 60 days after pregnancy ends, and their dependent children would be covered through their first birthday.

The legislation defines an undocumented immigrant as a resident of New Jersey unable to produce proof of lawful immigration status. Current Medicaid rules limit this group to treatment for emergency medical conditions, such as labor and delivery.

The bill directs the Commissioner of Human Services to seek federal funding for the program through waivers or state plan amendments. If federal financial participation is denied, the state could move forward using only state funds once money is appropriated.

The act would take effect immediately upon securing federal approval or, if necessary, upon the allocation of state funding.

──────────────────
Key Points

  • Bill offers NJ FamilyCare coverage to pregnant undocumented immigrants and their children under age one.
  • Coverage would extend beyond emergency care to include full medical benefits.
  • Implementation depends on federal funding approval or state appropriation.

Columbus, OH – An Ohio man has pleaded guilty in federal court to charges stemming from a brutal dog fighting operation and drug trafficking activities uncovered at his Franklin County residence.

Joel Brown, 38, admitted to possessing and training dogs for fighting purposes and to possessing methamphetamine with intent to distribute. Prosecutors said Brown kept 11 pit bull-type dogs on his property, chaining them with heavy tow chains anchored to buried tire axles — a common setup in organized dog fighting. The dogs were placed within view of one another but out of reach, intensifying aggression.

Authorities discovered the dogs after receiving complaints about animals being left outside. A search warrant executed by the Columbus Division of Police, in coordination with Columbus Humane, led to the rescue of the dogs and recovery of dog fighting tools and equipment.

Investigators also reviewed social media and found a video on one of Brown’s Facebook accounts showing a visibly scarred black pit bull running on a slatmill, a treadmill-like device commonly used to train fighting dogs.

During the search, officers also seized approximately 52 grams of methamphetamine from Brown’s home.

Brown now faces a minimum of five years and up to 40 years in federal prison for the drug offense. He also faces a maximum of five years in prison for the federal animal fighting charge. Sentencing will be scheduled at a later date.

The case was investigated by Columbus Humane, the Columbus Division of Police, and the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives (ATF). Prosecutors include Senior Trial Attorney Adam Cullman of the Environmental Crimes Section and Assistant U.S. Attorneys Nicole Pakiz and Kevin W. Kelley for the Southern District of Ohio.

Washington, DC – Two suspects from California have been arrested and charged with first-degree fraud after allegedly scamming a DC resident out of more than $640,000 through a months-long scheme involving fake tech support, wire transfers, and purchases of gold bars and coins.

According to the Metropolitan Police Department, the scam began in February when the victim’s computer crashed and a pop-up message appeared urging her to call a phony customer service number. Believing it to be legitimate, the victim made contact and was unknowingly connected to scammers. Over the next several months, the suspects instructed her to carry out multiple wire transfers and purchase large amounts of gold.

By June, the victim had lost more than $640,000. MPD’s Financial Crimes Unit began investigating and worked for weeks to track the suspects. On August 5, detectives from MPD’s Financial Crimes Unit and the Violent Crime Suppression Division conducted a targeted operation to intercept what the suspects believed would be a $200,000 gold exchange.

During that operation, 27-year-old Amruth Vaka and 28-year-old Saloni Shaikh, both of Stockton, California, were taken into custody. Both have been charged with first-degree fraud.

MPD has released images of the suspects and is asking the public to come forward with any information. Detectives believe the pair may be involved in additional scams and are working with federal and regional law enforcement agencies to expand the investigation.

Anyone with information or who believes they were targeted in a similar scam is asked to call 202-727-9099.

ALLENTOWN, PA — It happened on July 23 during a pursuit that ended in Whitehall Township — now an Allentown Police officer is facing criminal charges after allegedly striking a surrendering suspect in the face with the muzzle of his gun.

Officer Abviud Carvajal surrendered Thursday morning and was charged with one felony count of aggravated assault with a deadly weapon and a misdemeanor count of simple assault. He was arraigned and released on $25,000 unsecured bail. A preliminary hearing is scheduled for August 26.

According to the Lehigh County District Attorney’s Office, the charges stem from a use-of-force incident that occurred after officers chased 30-year-old Thomas Kravitz of Philadelphia, who was wanted for allegedly threatening his girlfriend and sending her images of a firearm.

Kravitz fled in his truck after officers tried to stop him near the 700 block of North 11th Street. The pursuit ended in a crash at 13th and Pennsylvania Streets in Whitehall Township. Police say body and dash camera footage shows Kravitz standing at the rear of his vehicle with his hands raised, surrendering, when Carvajal approached him with his firearm drawn.

The footage shows Kravitz empty-handed and clearly illuminated by police lights. As another officer held him at gunpoint, Carvajal struck Kravitz in the face with the muzzle of his weapon. Kravitz fell to the ground and was later treated at a local hospital.

District Attorney Gavin P. Holihan said the video shows no evidence that Kravitz made any threatening movements or reached for a weapon prior to being struck.

A loaded .22 caliber handgun was later recovered along the pursuit route and is believed to have been discarded by Kravitz. He remains in custody at Lehigh County Jail and faces multiple charges, including illegal possession of a firearm, fleeing police, and causing an accident while unlicensed.

The investigation into the officer’s conduct was referred by Allentown Police Chief Charles Roca and conducted jointly with the DA’s Office.

Lancaster, PA – A Lancaster man accused of attempting to set fire to a historic Civil War monument in Penn Square will face trial in county court following a preliminary hearing held last month.

Magisterial District Judge John Bender ruled on July 25 that the case against 38-year-old Francisco D. Rodriguez, of East Chestnut Street, will proceed to the Lancaster County Court of Common Pleas. Rodriguez faces multiple charges, including two counts each of arson of a historic resource, intentional desecration of a public monument, and public mutilation of a flag, as well as one count each of defiant trespass and disorderly conduct.

Rodriguez is accused of entering an enclosed area surrounding the 151-year-old Soldiers and Sailors Monument on July 19 and attempting to burn two American flags while placing plastic bags on the heads of statues within the memorial.

Surveillance footage from the Lancaster Safety Coalition and privately recorded videos captured Rodriguez crossing the four-foot fence into the monument area at around 2:45 p.m. Witnesses reported seeing him tampering with the statue and flags.

Lancaster City Police Sgt. T.J. Sinnott responded to the scene and testified that he observed Rodriguez “seemingly kickboxing nothing” before detaining him. Rodriguez admitted to police that he attempted to burn the flags and placed the plastic bags on the statues. Officers recovered two burned American flags and found Rodriguez in possession of a lighter.

The Soldiers and Sailors Monument, erected in 1874, honors Lancaster’s Civil War dead and has stood as a prominent symbol in the city’s downtown for over a century.

NEW YORK, NY — A group of four men is being sought in a fast-moving citywide robbery pattern targeting victims across five NYPD precincts, with six necklace-snatching incidents reported between July 9 and August 2.

The suspects, all described as males with dark complexions, are linked to a series of robberies in the 43rd, 47th, 49th, 50th, and 67th Precincts. Police say the group has used both a white Honda Civic and a dark-colored Nissan SUV to flee the scenes.

In multiple incidents, victims were approached at random and forcibly stripped of their necklaces, sometimes at gunpoint. Two victims were hospitalized with neck lacerations, and another fell to the ground while resisting.

The crime pattern began on July 9 around 5:00 p.m., when a 56-year-old man standing on Schenectady Avenue in Brooklyn was approached by two individuals who simulated firearms under their shirts before grabbing his necklace and fleeing in a waiting vehicle.

On July 17, two more incidents occurred just minutes apart. At 4:22 p.m., a 25-year-old man on Metropolitan Avenue in the Bronx was held at gunpoint by three suspects and had his necklace stolen. He suffered a neck injury and was taken to NYC Health + Hospitals/Jacobi. Just 17 minutes later, another man was robbed at gunpoint on Boston Road. He was unharmed, but police say the suspects displayed and simulated firearms during the robbery.

Two days later, a 16-year-old boy was attacked from behind near Hammersley and Grace Avenues. The suspects fled in a Nissan SUV. The teen sustained a minor neck injury and was treated at Jacobi Hospital.

Another incident was reported on July 26 in front of 4026 White Plains Road, where a 38-year-old man was shoved to the ground as suspects tore his necklace from his neck. He suffered minor injuries.

The latest reported robbery occurred on August 2, when a 78-year-old man standing on Van Cortlandt Avenue was targeted by a single suspect who grabbed his necklace and ran off. The victim was not injured.

The NYPD is urging anyone with information about the suspects or the vehicles involved to come forward.
