Playful pup Ozark waiting for forever home in Lacey

by Shore News Network October 2, 2025
By Shore News Network

Lacey, NJ – A 6-year-old dog named Ozark is looking for a permanent family after spending time in foster care through the Associated Humane Societies’ Forked River shelter.

Described as fun, goofy, and full of love, Ozark has been thriving in a home environment but has yet to find his lasting match. Shelter staff note that he is dog selective, meaning he may not get along with every other pet, but could be a good fit with the right companion.

Ozark is currently available for adoption at AHS’s Forked River location. Interested families can submit an application online at ahscares.org/adopt.

One lucky household could give Ozark the happy ending he’s been waiting for.

Feral kitten accidentally trapped in Jackson backyard finds permanent outdoor home

by Shore News Network October 2, 2025
By Shore News Network

Jackson, NJ – A feral kitten that spent the summer roaming backyards in Jackson has finally found a permanent home after being rescued and cared for by local animal groups.

The young cat, later named Willow, was first discovered when she wandered into a humane trap set by a homeowner who had been trying to catch a raccoon rummaging through trash cans. Unlike typical shelter cats, Willow resisted indoor life, showing a strong preference for the outdoors where she could roam freely.

Staff at the Ocean County Northern Animal Shelter collaborated with the Jersey Shore Animal Foundation to secure a safe placement for Willow in a barn or farm setting, where she will be able to live as an outdoor cat while still receiving care.

Shelter volunteers said cats like Willow arrive from time to time and require unique solutions outside of traditional adoptions.

Phil Stilton, the editor of Shore News Network, said that when Willow was found, he was shocked.

“I thought we captured the raccoon, until I got closer and realized it was the tiny kitten on our ring doorbell cam each night for the past few weeks,” he said. “Thanks to the folks over at the shelter, they took her in, cleaned her up, and found her a safe new home. Commissioner Sadeghi, who oversees the shelter, is doing a fantastic job. We would have kept her ourselves, but we already have three cats.”

Stilton said the area has a few feral cats, but many of them meet their demise on East Veterans Highway nearby.

Activist with ties to radical leftist group running for office in Republican stronghold of Jackson

“Glad we were able to save this one,” he said. “Unfortunately, they all usually end up trying to cross the highway at some point.”

As for the raccoon ravaging the garbage cans, it stopped coming shortly after and hasn’t been seen again.

One little trap led Willow from the backyard to a new beginning.

The Ocean County Animal Shelter has plenty of kittens and cats for adoption at this time, all looking for a forever home.

Latino History Could Soon be a Mandated Part of New Jersey Public School Curriculum

by Shore News Network October 2, 2025
By Shore News Network

Trenton, NJ – A new bill advancing through the New Jersey Legislature would require public schools to teach the history and contributions of Latinos and Hispanics as part of the state’s Social Studies standards, making the subject a permanent part of classroom instruction.

The measure, sponsored by Assemblyman Julio Marenco of Hudson County, Assemblywoman Eliana Pintor Marin of Essex and Hudson, Assemblywoman Carmen Theresa Morales of Essex, and Assemblywoman Annette Quijano of Union, mandates that students from kindergarten through 12th grade learn about Latino and Hispanic heritage. Supporters say the instruction must be historically accurate, culturally relevant, community-based, and developmentally appropriate.

The legislation also directs the State Board of Education to adopt updated New Jersey Student Learning Standards in Social Studies reflecting Latino and Hispanic history. The Commissioner of Education, working with the Commission on Latino and Hispanic Heritage, would be tasked with providing school districts sample activities and resources to support the new curriculum.

The bill was released as a substitute version by the Assembly Budget Committee with a long list of co-sponsors, including Assemblywomen McCoy, Hall, Bagolie, Ramirez, Collazos-Gill, Reynolds-Jackson, Carter, Assemblymen Rodriguez, Sampson, Schaer, and Bailey.

If enacted, the requirement would take effect immediately and apply to the first full school year following passage, aligning with each scheduled update of the state’s Student Learning Standards.

New Jersey classrooms are on track to make Latino and Hispanic history part of everyday lessons.

MAGNOLIA, DE — A 23-year-old man is behind bars on felony charges after police say he recklessly discharged a loaded handgun inside a Magnolia residence, killing a 20-year-old woman Tuesday night.

Delaware State Police were called to a home in the 800 block of Millchop Lane around 7:30 p.m. after receiving a report of a shooting. Virginia Beach man charged after fatal pedestrian hit-and-run on Virginia Beach Boulevard

VIRGINIA BEACH, VA — A 72-year-old man is dead and a local driver is facing charges after a late-night pedestrian crash on Virginia Beach Boulevard turned into a fatal hit-and-run, police said Tuesday.

Just before midnight on Monday, officers responded to the 2400 block of Virginia Beach Boulevard where they found the pedestrian unresponsive in the roadway. He was pronounced dead at the scene.

The investigation revealed the man was initially struck by a vehicle that fled the area. A second vehicle, also involved in the crash, remained at the scene and its driver cooperated with investigators. Officers later identified and located the first driver, 39-year-old Anthony Smith of Virginia Beach. So far this year, VBPD has investigated five fatal pedestrian crashes — all of which involved pedestrians who were found to be at fault.

The incident remains under active investigation by the VBPD Traffic Safety Unit. Police say pedestrian safety remains a growing concern and are urging both drivers and pedestrians to obey traffic laws and remain vigilant.

Anyone with information about this crash is asked to call the VBPD Traffic Safety Unit at 757-385-4606 or submit an anonymous tip through Crime Solvers by calling 1-888-LOCK-U-UP or visiting P3Tips.com.

Fatal head-on crash leads to guilty plea and jail time in Derry Township

Blairsville woman sentenced to jail after pleading guilty in deadly Route 217 crash

GREENSBURG, PA — A Blairsville woman who crossed into oncoming traffic, causing a fatal crash that killed another driver, has pleaded guilty to homicide by vehicle and will serve time in jail, according to the Westmoreland County District Attorney’s Office.

Ashley Kelley, 33, entered the plea Monday before Common Pleas Judge Michael Stewart, admitting responsibility for the February 2024 crash on Route 217 in Derry Township that took the life of Regina Endress, an Indiana County resident. The crash occurred when Kelley’s van veered across the center line and struck Endress’ vehicle head-on.

Kelley told responding troopers that by the time she realized she was in the wrong lane, it was too late to avoid the collision.

Initially, Kelley faced several charges including homicide by vehicle while driving under the influence, reckless driving, and recklessly endangering another person. However, the DUI-related charge was later withdrawn. Investigators said a drug recognition expert determined there was not enough marijuana in Kelley’s system to impair her ability to drive at the time of the crash.

As part of the plea agreement, Kelley was sentenced to serve a term of one year less a day to two years less a day in jail — a sentence that places her in a county facility rather than state prison.

The case is now closed following the court proceedings.

Key Points

  • Ashley Kelley, 33, pleaded guilty to homicide by vehicle in a February crash that killed another driver
  • Investigators ruled out DUI impairment, leading to dismissal of that specific charge
  • Kelley received a county jail sentence of one to two years minus one day

Atlantic City man arrested for alleged abuse of 12-year-old girl in drug exchange case

ATLANTIC CITY, NJ — A man is facing serious charges after investigators say he began a sexual relationship with a 12-year-old girl, providing her with marijuana and vape pens in exchange for sexual acts, according to police.

The investigation was launched on Sunday after a parent reported concerns about their 13-year-old daughter’s relationship with an adult. Detectives from the Atlantic City Police Department’s Special Victims Unit uncovered text messages suggesting the relationship began when the child was 12. The messages also indicated that David Roary, 41, had given the girl marijuana and THC vape pens in connection with the alleged abuse.

Based on the evidence collected, a court-authorized search warrant was obtained for Roary’s residence on the 1100 block of Baltic Avenue. On Wednesday, members of the Atlantic City Police Department SWAT Team executed the warrant and arrested Roary without incident.

Roary has been charged with aggravated sexual assault, two counts of sexual assault, criminal sexual contact, endangering the welfare of a child, and possession of a controlled dangerous substance (CDS). The aggravated sexual assault charge is a first-degree offense under the Jessica Lunsford Act, which applies stricter penalties when the victim is under the age of 13.

Roary was taken to the Atlantic County Justice Facility following his arrest. The Atlantic County Prosecutor’s Office assisted with the investigation. All charges are accusations, and the defendant is presumed innocent unless and until proven guilty in a court of law.

Anyone with information regarding the distribution of narcotics or related activity is urged to contact the Atlantic City Police Department Special Victims Unit at 609-347-5858 or send an anonymous tip via text to tip411 (847411). Begin the message with ACPD.

Help needed for two huskies at Northern Ocean County Animal Facility

OCEAN COUNTY, NJ — Two young huskies currently housed at the Northern Ocean County Animal Facility are in urgent need of placement through a 501(c)(3) rescue group or experienced foster home, according to a recent plea from the shelter’s supporters.

The dogs, Lassie and Ivan, are both under 50 pounds and described as dog-friendly, with no issues around cats. However, each has displayed resource-guarding behavior — Lassie with rawhide treats and Ivan with food — making them unsuitable for standard shelter environments without additional support or behavioral guidance.

Lassie, approximately four years old, is a petite female who has shown good behavior around other dogs and cats but becomes possessive when it comes to treats. Ivan, about two years old, is similarly sociable but struggles with food guarding.

Jersey City Art & Studio Tour returns with citywide showcase of culture and creativity

by Shore News Network October 1, 2025
By Shore News Network

Jersey City, NJ – The 36th Annual Jersey City Art & Studio Tour (JCAST) kicks off Friday, transforming the city into a sprawling gallery with more than 120 venues across all six wards from October 3 through October 5.

This year’s theme, “Convergence: Art, Technology, Business, and Wellness,” highlights the intersection of creativity and community. The three-day event will feature over 60 open artist studios, curated exhibitions, live performances, film screenings, poetry readings, and interactive installations.

Founded in 1990 as a small downtown studio tour, JCAST has grown into one of the region’s longest-running open studio festivals, drawing more than 5,000 visitors annually and reinforcing Jersey City’s status as a major cultural hub.

Mayor Steven Fulop praised the event’s citywide reach, saying JCAST “showcases what makes Jersey City special: world-class creativity in every ward and a community that celebrates its artists and small businesses.”

Produced by The Creative Side under founder and director Atim Annette Oton, along with Donna Kessinger, Melissa Ulto, Judith Rahilly, and Shantel Asante-Kissi, the 2025 edition includes two major curated shows: “Convergence: Pivoting a Renaissance” at Eden Wood Realty and “The Art of Convergence” at the Mary McLeod Bethune Life Center.

The weekend will also feature business networking sessions, a VIP fundraiser, and Friday’s official kick-off party with live jazz and the presentation of JCAST Legend Awards to photographer Ernie Pannicioli and the late Ruth Moore of Moore’s Lounge.

Saturday programming includes guided art tours, a two-wheel “art crawl” by Bike JC, LGBTQ+ and women-focused artist tours, and panel discussions. Full schedules and locations are available at TheJCAST.com.

Christine Goodman, the city’s cultural affairs director, said the tour embodies the city’s spirit. “Every October, JCAST brings the city to life through the beauty and energy of art,” she said.

For one weekend, the streets of Jersey City will double as a canvas, celebrating artists and the communities that support them.

New Yorkers Don’t Seem to be Shooting Each Other as Much as Normal, Report Shows

by Shore News Network October 1, 2025
By Shore News Network

New York, NY – New York City is seeing record-breaking drops in crime, with police officials announcing Wednesday that the first nine months of 2025 produced the fewest shooting incidents and shooting victims in the city’s history. The third quarter was also the safest on record in the subway system, with major transit crime hitting all-time lows in July, August, and September, excluding pandemic years.

NYPD Commissioner Jessica S. Tisch credited the department’s precision policing strategy, which she said combined aggressive gang takedowns, gun seizures, and data-driven deployments in high-crime areas. “This is not a coincidence — it’s the result of an unprecedented, data-driven deployment of thousands of officers to the areas they are needed most,” Tisch said.

Citywide, shooting incidents are down more than 20 percent this year, with 553 cases compared to 693 in 2024. Shooting victims dropped 19 percent to 694, the lowest level ever recorded. In the Bronx, shootings fell by 25 percent in the last quarter, Staten Island by 20 percent, Manhattan by nearly 19 percent, and Queens by 17 percent. Brooklyn saw a slight increase of two incidents.

The NYPD’s Summer Violence Reduction Plan, which deployed up to 2,300 officers nightly across 72 zones in 59 communities, helped drive the declines. Over 19 weeks, shootings in those zones dropped 47 percent and victims fell 44 percent. Detectives also carried out a record 55 gang takedowns and seized more than 4,175 illegal guns this year.

Transit crime fell 13.7 percent in the third quarter, marking the safest quarter ever underground. Shooting incidents in the subway dropped 67 percent year-to-date. Major crimes across the city also posted declines, including murders down nearly 18 percent, robberies down 9.8 percent, burglary down 3.8 percent, and retail theft down 13 percent.

Mayor Eric Adams said the numbers reflect two consecutive years of overall crime reductions and credited the NYPD for restoring confidence in public safety. “New York City remains the safest big city in America,” Adams said.

From the streets to the subways, the city closed summer with historic declines that officials vow to carry into the fall.

Hero sukkah mobiles to roll through Monmouth and Ocean for Sukkot celebration

by Shore News Network October 1, 2025
By Shore News Network

Monmouth & Ocean Counties, NJ – A fleet of 30 mobile sukkahs will travel through local communities next week as part of the Midstate Chabad Regional Office’s new Hero Sukkah Mobiles project, honoring October 7 heroes while sharing the traditions of Sukkot.

From October 9 through October 12, the sukkah mobiles will make scheduled stops at schools, city halls, transit hubs, shopping centers and residential neighborhoods. Each mobile sukkah will be staffed by Chabad rabbinical students and community ambassadors, inviting visitors to step inside, make a blessing, and hear the story of the hero their sukkah is dedicated to.

“This project is about transforming every individual into a lamplighter, bringing light, warmth, and inspiration to others,” said Rabbi Mendel Chazanow, Director of Organizational Development at the Midstate Chabad Regional Office. “These sukkahs will spread the joy of Sukkot across Monmouth and Ocean Counties and reach places where it may never have been experienced before.”

Organizers are also calling for volunteers to serve as “Hero Sukkah Ambassadors.” Participants will commit to a two-hour shift, greeting guests and sharing their sukkah’s hero story. Families are encouraged to join together to help create a welcoming environment.

The sukkah mobiles will operate on October 9, 10 and 12 across multiple towns in both counties.

The traveling sukkahs aim to turn local streets into spaces of tradition, memory and celebration.

Yaphank woman admits guilt in fatal DWI crash that killed grandmother in Middle Island

by Shore News Network October 1, 2025
By Shore News Network

Suffolk County, NY – A Yaphank woman pleaded guilty Wednesday to manslaughter and multiple related charges for a 2024 crash on Middle Country Road that killed a 75-year-old passenger and injured her daughter, prosecutors announced.

Melissa Koprowski, 32, admitted she was drunk and high on marijuana when she attempted to make a left turn in front of oncoming traffic on November 22, 2024, striking a blue Nissan Rogue head-on at the intersection of Wading River Hollow Road in Middle Island.

The crash killed Esther Guy, 75, who was seated in the backseat of the Rogue alongside her two-year-old grandchild. The child was unharmed, while the driver – Guy’s daughter – was hospitalized with injuries.

Prosecutors said Koprowski’s Dodge Durango slammed into the Nissan, forcing it off the roadway and into a wooded shoulder. Toxicology tests later showed her blood alcohol concentration was .12 percent, with a high level of THC also present in her system.

Koprowski was charged with Manslaughter in the Second Degree, Vehicular Manslaughter in the Second Degree, Assault in the Second Degree, Assault in the Third Degree, multiple counts of Driving While Intoxicated, Driving While Ability Impaired by Drugs, Driving While Ability Impaired by a Combination of Alcohol and Drugs, and Reckless Driving.

She faces between 4 and 12 years in prison when sentenced on November 17 before Acting Supreme Court Justice Richard I. Horowitz.

District Attorney Raymond A. Tierney said the plea delivers accountability for a preventable tragedy.

The reckless turn left a grandmother dead, a daughter wounded, and a family forever scarred.
