QUEENS, NY — A Roosevelt man has been sentenced to seven to 21 years in prison for a 2023 collision on the Long Island Expressway that killed one passenger and seriously injured three others, Queens prosecutors said.

Reginald Nash, 26, pleaded guilty in May to aggravated vehicular homicide and assault in the second degree. Supreme Court Justice Michael Hartofilis handed down the sentence Wednesday.

Prosecutors said Nash was driving a 2021 Honda Accord eastbound near the Greenpoint Avenue exit at approximately 4:30 a.m. on November 19, 2023, when he crashed into a highway attenuator. Investigators determined he was traveling about 89 mph and had a blood alcohol level of 0.12 percent, exceeding the legal limit of 0.08 percent.

The impact caused the vehicle to spin and collide with two other cars. One passenger, 23-year-old Cameron Mency, was ejected nearly 90 feet and later pronounced dead at a hospital. Three other passengers, including Nash’s sister, suffered serious injuries, some requiring surgeries.

The case was prosecuted by the Queens District Attorney’s Career Criminal Major Crimes Bureau with assistance from the Vehicular Homicide Unit.

TRENTON, N.J. — Commuters faced delays across several key New Jersey roadways Thursday morning, with traffic congestion, minor crashes, and lane closures contributing to extended travel times.

As of 8:30 a.m., drivers heading into New York from New Jersey encountered delays at both the center and south tunnels of the Lincoln Tunnel, with each route showing a 15-minute travel time from Turnpike Exit 16E to the New York side. At the George Washington Bridge, the upper level eastbound had a 35-minute delay, while the lower level reported a 30-minute delay from I-80 to the Alexander Hamilton Bridge.

Within New Jersey, the Garden State Parkway northbound saw a 3-mile delay between Exit 148 in Bloomfield and Exit 151 due to volume. A disabled vehicle near Exit 90 in Lakewood Township blocked the center lane, further slowing traffic in that area. Delays were also reported northbound between Lakewood and Brick Township around Exit 89C.

A crash was cleared on NJ 17 northbound near Williams Avenue in Hasbrouck Heights, with all lanes open by 8:28 a.m. NJ 4 eastbound in Teaneck and NJ 21 northbound in Clifton also remained open despite congestion. Traffic on NJ 21 earlier in Newark remained heavy between Wright Street and Clay Street.

Motorists traveling through Moorestown faced complications due to a downed traffic signal on NJ 38 near Church Road. Although westbound lanes were fully open, the eastbound direction had one right lane and the shoulder closed.

The New Jersey Turnpike inner roadway northbound had one left lane closed due to roadwork near Interchange 8A in Monroe Township. Further east, the Hudson County Extension continued to experience delays from Interchange 14 in Newark.

Delays also stretched across I-295 in Mercer County, with northbound traffic slow from Olden Avenue in Hamilton to US 1 in Lawrence. On I-287, drivers faced congestion from Piscataway to Franklin Township, and I-78 westbound was backed up in Union and Springfield. Meanwhile, both directions of I-280 remained slow through East Orange and Newark.

The Pulaski Skyway remained congested northbound from Broadway to the Turnpike/NJ 139 split in Jersey City. Construction on the George Washington Bridge lower level westbound caused a right lane closure between Exit 1A and the New York side.

QUEENS, N.Y. — A Queens man has been indicted for the fatal beating of his wife last November, accused of inflicting injuries so severe they crushed her brain stem, authorities said.

Jose Lequerica, 50, was arrested Tuesday at his home on 34th Avenue in Jackson Heights by officers from the NYPD’s 115th Precinct. He has been charged with two counts of second-degree murder in the death of his wife, 48-year-old Asli Ak.

The attack occurred on the night of November 15 inside the couple’s apartment. According to the Queens District Attorney’s Office, Lequerica repeatedly struck Ak in the face, head, and body during a violent assault in their bedroom.

After the beating, prosecutors say Lequerica left the home for two hours and, upon returning, chose to sleep on the couch without checking on Ak’s condition. The next morning, at approximately 10:45 a.m., he reportedly found her unconscious on the bedroom floor but did not seek help for several hours.

He eventually called 911 at 6:22 p.m. Emergency responders transported Ak to Elmhurst Hospital, where doctors found she had sustained extensive trauma to her face, head, and body. She was declared brain-dead on November 20.

“On the morning of Nov. 17th, I got a visit from detectives of the 115th precinct informing me that my sister Asli was in Elmhurst Hospital with a severe head injury. This crushed my soul, but still, I remained positive and optimistic despite what I was told. Life hit hard 3 days later on November 20th when she was pronounced dead. At 48 years old, we lost her too soon. This has come as a shock to all who knew her. We would like to see the ongoing police investigation through and justice served,” said her brother Osman Ak.

An autopsy later confirmed the cause of death as blunt force trauma to the head. The Office of the Chief Medical Examiner ruled her death a homicide.

“The autopsy revealed that she had severe head injuries including a hematoma that caused swelling inside the head, crushing her brain stem,” the Queens DA’s office said in a statement.

Lequerica pleaded not guilty during his arraignment before Supreme Court Justice Ira Margulis.

The family is hosting a GoFundMe fundraiser to help the family financially.

The June 10th Republican gubernatorial primary was supposed to be a contest between Jack Ciattarelli and Bill Spadea. To insiders, however, it was just as much (if not more so) a contest between George Gilmore & Company versus, well, apparently almost everyone else in the Ocean County GOP.

To many, this was all about Ocean County, where its GOP Chairman George Gilmore overtly stacked the deck in Spadea’s favor, according to the opinions of some including Jack Ciattarelli himself, as reported at The Shore News Network and elsewhere.

Chairman Gilmore, a perpetually self-proclaimed “Organization Guy,” was, pre-primary, a paid “consultant” for Spadea, putting his money ahead of the organization in the minds of many.  In fact, reports from some attendees at certain Ocean County GOP events during the primary campaign say that Ciattarelli appeared at least one, if not more, events where Chairman Gilmore would not even allow him to speak – but Spadea spoke.

Still others shared that Gilmore was visibly upset with Jack Ciattarelli for even showing up at one or more Ocean County GOP functions, again, before the primary.

While Spadea took a trouncing statewide.; the Gubernatorial Primary was called statewide in less than a half hour, (was it 18 minutes?) after polls closed.

Spadea didn’t just lose; he was routed.

In “must-win” Ocean County, the results pretty much echoed statewide results. This maimed its Chairman, a.k.a. paid political consultant. Gilmore made the Ocean County Gubernatorial primary “THE” race to watch for political observers – and watch they did; he made Ocean County the hill to die on.

That being said, like a phoenix from the ashes, George Gilmore has accepted neither losses, setbacks, a felony conviction, nor (political) death.

The Ocean County Gubernatorial Primary handed George Gilmore a lemon – a big one. “A genius is a man who takes the lemons that Fate hands him and starts a lemonade-stand with them.”

So said Elbert Hubbard who is credited with first using this phrase in print back in 1909. (Literary Digest). In politics Homer E. Capehart, in his first campaign for Senate, was known to have said, “I have never been afraid of trouble. I have always had this slogan: If somebody hands you a lemon, make lemonade of it.”

Was George Gilmore a student of Hubbard and Capehart?

Gilmore found himself faced with several choices, none of them palatable; those choices include continuing to deny Ciattarelli his well-earned endorsement of the Ocean County GOP Chairman as mandated by the registered Republican voters of Ocean County who voted June 10th, keeping one foot on the dock and the other on the boat as Ocean County residents probably know is not a long term strategy, fully and formally endorse Ciattarelli or, at the very least, perform the ceremonial functions of his position as County GOP Chairman.

Jack Ciattarelli’s campaign slogan, “IT’S TIME,” may have been prophetic for the Ocean County GOP.

Ciattarelli for Governor held a fundraiser cocktail party at the Toms River Country Club on Wednesday night. Tickets started at $500 and went up to $10,000.  It was very well attended by many enthusiastic Ocean County Republican supporters/donors; reportedly, it was standing room only. Factions that were previously and still at odds attended and were in the same room together. It could be said that the attendees were a Who’s Who of the Ocean County GOP.

Though not headlining or even being named as a member of the Host Committee on the advertisement for the event – notably present at the event was none other than Ocean County Chairman George Gilmore.

According to some who were there, he spoke, he was gracious and supportive of having a Republican Governor. It was Jack’s night in Ocean County.

It may be the early dawn of a time for Ocean County’s Republicans to decide whether they are content with being a bit and bridled gelding or a proud stallion, a castrone or a stallone? It may also be time for healing, unity and a better way of doing things. Much of that is up to George Gilmore and those of his followers who benefit from the status quo. Perhaps for the Ocean County GOP, it’s time. Or as Jack Ciattarelli (or his ancestors) might say, ‘e ora (It’s Time).

We are pleased to continue to host Jeri Bahar here for this OpEd piece.

Cincinnati man arrested for online threats to kill ICE officers, faces federal charges

CINCINNATI — A 38-year-old Cincinnati man was arrested Friday by federal authorities after allegedly posting multiple threats online to kill officers with U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE), according to officials.

Anthony Marcus Kelly faces federal charges including threatening to assault, kidnap, or murder a U.S. official, and transmitting threats across state lines. The arrest was carried out by ICE’s Homeland Security Investigations (HSI) and the FBI following an investigation into a social media account using the name “Slab.”

Authorities say Kelly posted threats on social media referencing firearms and calling for violence against ICE personnel. In one post, he wrote, “Why even bother with these damn courts anymore… they’re rabid dogs that need to be put down.” Another post warned, “You come here for me, you’re getting shot… I’m shooting for the kill.”

“Let me be crystal clear: Threatening to kill a federal officer is not protest — it’s terrorism,” said acting ICE Director Todd M. Lyons. “Anyone who targets ICE personnel will be met with swift, unrelenting justice.”

Kelly is currently in federal custody awaiting further proceedings.
