Senate approves Holzapfel bill adding green warning lights to snowplows for safer winter roads

TRENTON, N.J. – The New Jersey Senate has passed legislation sponsored by Senator Jim Holzapfel that would allow state and local government snow removal and road salting vehicles to display both amber and green warning lights during winter operations to enhance visibility and safety.

The measure aims to reduce accidents and improve protection for road crews and motorists during severe weather. Holzapfel said the change was driven by evidence showing that green lights are significantly more visible than traditional amber ones, particularly in snow or low-visibility conditions.

“Keeping motorists and road crews safe during severe winter weather has to be a top priority,” Holzapfel said. “By allowing snowplows and salting vehicles to display both amber and green warning lights, we can give drivers a more-visible notice to help prevent accidents and protect the workers keeping our roads safe.”

Studies from other states have found that combining green LED lights with amber lights can improve visibility up to sixfold compared with amber lights alone. Officials say the bill is a simple but effective update to equipment standards that could help prevent collisions and injuries during snow and ice operations.

Senator Jim Holzapfel’s bill to add green lights to snowplows and road salters passes the Senate to improve visibility and safety during winter storms.
