WASHINGTON, D.C. — Congresswoman. Mikie Sherrill is facing backlash after appearing to reverse her stance on New York Assemblyman Zohran Mamdani, a Democratic Socialist known for progressive policies that have drawn national attention.

In a recent statement, Sherrill seemed to distance herself from Mamdani, despite earlier comments that suggested she found his platform “interesting” and shared some of his voters’ goals. Critics, including Republican officials and political opponents, have accused the New Jersey Democrat of backpedaling as scrutiny of her gubernatorial campaign intensifies over her previous support of the socialist New York City candidate.

“Mikie Sherrill’s official comments saying she shares the goals of Socialist Zohran Mamdani is not only absurd, but it is disqualifying, period full stop,” said Republican Governors Association Communications Director Courtney Alexander.

She cited Mamdani’s support for policies such as defunding the police, ending cooperation with federal immigration enforcement, and advocating for government-run grocery stores.

Sherrill’s office has since downplayed the connection, saying she was speaking broadly about engaging new voters and not endorsing any specific platform or figure. However, GOP opponents remain unconvinced.

“Come on, Mikie — NJ voters aren’t stupid,” said former gubernatorial candidate Jack Ciattarelli. “Roll the tape. You said it. You own it.”
