Shrewsbury first responders honored with award for lifesaving efforts

SHREWSBURY, MA – Worcester County District Attorney Joseph D. Early Jr. honored several Shrewsbury first responders today for their heroic efforts in reviving a local man, Andy MacIsaac, who suffered a cardiac arrest last July.

The recipients of the District Attorney’s Team Excellence and Merit (TEAM) Award included Shrewsbury Police Officers, Firefighters, Dispatchers, and UMass EMS personnel. They were recognized for their collaborative response that saved MacIsaac’s life after he collapsed at his home on July 2, a Sunday.

MacIsaac’s emergency began shortly after he returned home from a morning walk with his dogs. His wife, Tricia, called 911 while her visiting brother initiated chest compressions. Worcester EMS Dispatcher John Cappe guided them through the procedure until police and fire services arrived and took over.

The first responders performed CPR for approximately 30 minutes before successfully restoring MacIsaac’s heartbeat. He was then transported to UMass Memorial Medical Center by Worcester EMS, where he underwent surgery to clear blockages in his heart, leading to a recovery swift enough for him to be discharged in less than a week.

In gratitude, MacIsaac expressed his deep appreciation for the responders’ quick action and professionalism, which he credited with giving him a “second chance at life.” Shrewsbury Police Department Chief Kevin Anderson also praised the teamwork exhibited during the call, highlighting its significance in community safety.

The ceremony also acknowledged individual contributions from the Shrewsbury Police and Fire Departments and Worcester EMS, listing all personnel who played a crucial role in the rescue effort. The TEAM Award, initiated by DA Early in 2019, serves to recognize public safety employees who demonstrate exceptional service.
