Skokie man charged after woman, 23, shot and wounded in Edgewater

CHICAGO, IL – A 28-year-old man from Skokie has been charged with aggravated battery after allegedly shooting a woman on Chicago’s North Side.

Justin Abbott was taken into custody Monday morning in Uptown after police said he opened fire just minutes earlier in nearby Edgewater, striking a 23-year-old woman.

Abbott faces one felony count of aggravated battery with discharge of a firearm and is scheduled for a detention hearing Tuesday at 2600 S. California.

Arrest followed quick response

Police located Abbott around 9:23 a.m. Monday in the 800 block of West Ainslie, about a mile from where the shooting took place in the 5700 block of North Broadway. Officers reportedly identified him as the shooter within minutes of the incident and detained him without further violence.

Victim recovering as investigation continues

The 23-year-old woman was transported to an area hospital for treatment of injuries sustained in the shooting. Her current condition has not been released. Detectives from the 20th District are continuing the investigation, and no motive or additional suspects have been disclosed.

Upcoming court appearance

Abbott, of the 9000 block of Skokie Boulevard in Skokie, is set to appear before a judge at the Cook County Criminal Courthouse on Tuesday. Prosecutors are expected to present evidence during the detention hearing as the case proceeds.
