Stamford police department announces in-custody death, launches investigation

Stamford, CT – The Stamford Police Department has released a statement regarding the tragic in-custody death of 36-year-old Jamal Linton, which occurred on January 26, 2025. The incident took place at approximately 5:43 p.m. in the detention area of Police Headquarters.

According to the department, Linton was found unresponsive in his cell by detention officers. Preliminary reports indicate that he had apparently suffocated himself using a ligature. Officers immediately administered first aid and rushed him to Stamford Hospital via ambulance. Unfortunately, Linton was later pronounced dead at the hospital.

On January 27, 2025, the Office of the Chief Medical Examiner conducted an autopsy and determined the manner of death to be suicide.

In their statement, the Stamford Police Department expressed deep sorrow over the incident. “Our thoughts and heartfelt condolences go out to the family of the deceased during this extremely difficult time,” the department said.

The Stamford Police Department emphasized its commitment to accountability and transparency, assuring the public that a thorough and impartial investigation is already underway. The Office of the Inspector General has been tasked with leading the investigation into the circumstances surrounding Linton’s death.

“This investigation is still ongoing,” the department noted, directing further inquiries to the Inspector General’s Office at 203-806-1595.
