JACKSON TOWNSHIP — A heavily trafficked intersection along the Lakewood–Jackson border has received a temporary fix aimed at easing congestion and calming growing frustration among local residents, particularly during the busy morning commute.
In recent years, the intersection of Louisiana Parkway and South New Prospect Road has become a significant bottleneck, especially during school drop-off and pick-up hours when a large number of school buses travel through the area.
Residents have raised concerns about delays and safety as traffic volume increased in what has become a rapidly developing neighborhood. The area is also home to Jackson Township Council President Mordechai Burnstein.
Last week, Jackson Township implemented a new temporary traffic striping and roadway pattern at the intersection. The changes include designated turning movements intended to improve traffic flow and reduce confusion for drivers navigating the busy corridor during peak hours.
The cost of the project was not disclosed at this time by the adminstration of Jackson Mayor Jennifer Kuhn.
Township officials emphasized that the current striping is temporary and part of a broader roadway improvement plan for the area.
The temporary layout will remain in place during a ground settlement period following the recent removal of traffic islands. This settlement phase allows the pavement to stabilize before permanent resurfacing work begins, helping ensure long-term durability and safety.
The Township’s contractor, Meco, is expected to return in early spring, weather permitting, to mill and repave the affected roadway. Once that work is completed, permanent striping will be installed. Officials say the temporary configuration also provides an opportunity to monitor traffic patterns and make adjustments if needed before final markings are applied.
Meco is operating under a 2025 bid with the township allowing for up to $1,671,173.50 in roadway work to be completed each year.
These improvements are part of ongoing efforts by Mayor Jennifer Kuhn and the Township Council to enhance roadway infrastructure throughout Jackson Township. The goal, officials said, is to improve safety and efficiency for motorists, pedestrians, school buses, and nearby residents in high-traffic areas.
Residents are advised to use caution while traveling through the intersection during this temporary phase and to follow all posted traffic markings. Township officials thanked the public for their patience and cooperation as the project moves forward and work continues toward a permanent solution.
