A Texas traveler is facing criminal charges after authorities say a handgun was discovered inside his carry-on luggage at a security checkpoint at Pittsburgh International Airport.

A routine security screening at Pittsburgh International Airport led to the arrest of a Texas man after Transportation Security Administration officers found a firearm inside his carry-on bag, according to Allegheny County Police.

The incident occurred at approximately 10:08 a.m. Thursday at the airport’s security checkpoint.

TSA officers conducting passenger screenings observed a handgun inside a carry-on bag and immediately notified Allegheny County Police.

Firearm Discovered During Screening

Responding officers identified the passenger as 23-year-old Liam Grant of Royse City, Texas.

Police launched an investigation and determined that Grant did not possess a valid concealed carry permit, authorities said.

As a result, Grant was charged with carrying a firearm without a license.

The Federal Bureau of Investigation was also notified about the incident.

Airport Firearm Violations Carry Significant Penalties

Authorities reminded travelers that bringing firearms into airport security checkpoints can result in both criminal charges and substantial federal penalties.

According to the Transportation Security Administration, passengers who bring firearms into a security checkpoint can face civil fines of up to $10,000.

Repeat offenders may face penalties as high as $13,910.

Firearms transported by air must be unloaded, properly secured, and declared to the airline in accordance with federal regulations.

Officials did not indicate whether additional charges may be filed.

No disruptions to airport operations were reported as a result of the incident.

As with all criminal defendants, Grant is presumed innocent unless and until proven guilty in court.
