NEWARK, DE – Three students at Glasgow High School were arrested Wednesday morning after a loaded stolen handgun was found inside a student’s backpack following a confrontation with a school resource officer, Delaware State Police said.

The incident began around 9:19 a.m. when staff alerted the on-site School Resource Officer to a conversation among three students referring to a “trap,” a term commonly used for a handgun.

The students—a 15-year-old, a 17-year-old, and 18-year-old Troy Alston—were escorted to the office for questioning, where one of them attempted to flee.

Loaded gun recovered during school struggle

As the 15-year-old student tried to run into the hallway, a struggle broke out with the SRO. Police said the two other students grabbed the officer from behind in an apparent attempt to stop the arrest. All three were ultimately detained without further incident.

A search of the 15-year-old’s backpack revealed a loaded .40 caliber handgun, which police later determined had been reported stolen to the New Castle City Police Department. No injuries were reported to students or staff.

Felony charges filed against 15-year-old suspect

The 15-year-old Newark teen was charged with six felony offenses, including possession of a firearm by a person under 21, possession of ammunition by a person under 21, possession of a firearm in a safe school zone, carrying a concealed firearm, possession of a firearm during the commission of a felony, and receiving a stolen firearm. He was also charged with resisting arrest.

The teen was arraigned in Justice of the Peace Court No. 11 and committed to a Delaware youth facility in lieu of $117,000 cash bond.

Delaware State Police said the investigation remains active as additional charges against the older students are pending review.
