Toms river offers summer paddleboarding and bodyboarding camps for kids

TOMS RIVER, N.J. — Toms River Recreation is teaming up with Coastline Adventures to host a series of youth summer camps focused on water sports, including stand-up paddleboarding and bodyboarding, at two popular locations along the Jersey Shore.

The Stand Up Paddleboarding (SUP) Camps will take place at Shelter Cove Park and are open to children ages 8 to 16. The four-day sessions are scheduled for July 14–17 and July 28–31, running from 8:30 a.m. to 11:30 a.m. each day. Each session includes equipment. Organizers require that children already know how to swim.

Across town at Ortley Beach, Kids’ Bodyboarding Camps will cater to younger participants between the ages of 6 and 12. These four-day camps are equipment provided. Two sessions are scheduled: June 30–July 3 and August 18–21, from 8:30 a.m. to 11:30 a.m.

“Participants must know how to swim,” read the official camp materials, which emphasize water safety, skill development, and structured beach games. Both programs list a wide range of activities, including proper technique instruction, nature exploration, and water safety training.

Rain dates are set for the Friday of each scheduled camp week. Children are advised to dress for the beach and bring appropriate supplies such as water shoes, towels, and sunscreen.

Camps focus on water safety and skill building

Each SUP session includes activities such as location assessments, progressive skill building, and self-rescue training. Bodyboarding camps also include ocean safety training, wave riding instruction, and yoga-based warmups.

The camps are organized by Toms River Recreation in coordination with Coastline Adventures, a local surf education company. Registration is available through Community Pass via the township’s recreation webpage.

Campers will meet instructors on site each day, with SUP campers gathering in the Shelter Cove Beach parking lot and bodyboarders meeting at the Ortley Beach boardwalk entrance at 7th Avenue.
