WILDWOOD, N.J. — President Donald Trump on Wednesday credited Rep. Jeff Van Drew for helping to stop a major offshore wind project off the coast of New Jersey, calling the cancellation a victory against Governor Phil Murphy’s radical and failing energy plan.
“To the many Great Americans enjoying their Summer Vacations in Atlantic City, Wildwood, and Cape May… your Republican Congressman, and my GREAT friend, Jeff Van Drew, is fighting hard, and WINNING, to keep your Beaches BEAUTIFUL, with NO WINDMILLS,” Trump posted on his social media account.
The remarks come in response to the recent withdrawal of a large-scale wind energy project that had been slated for development in waters off the southern New Jersey coast. Though the company behind the project cited financial and regulatory challenges, Trump attributed the cancellation to political opposition led by Van Drew and his allies.
“It would have been a disaster, but they gave up because of the onslaught of ‘TRUMP’/Van Drew,” Trump wrote. “Great job, Jeff!”
Van Drew, a Republican who represents New Jersey’s 2nd Congressional District, has long been critical of offshore wind initiatives, raising concerns over environmental impact, marine life, and local economies reliant on tourism and fishing.
The failed wind project was part of a broader state push under Governor Murphy’s administration to transition to renewable energy. The Governor’s office has not responded publicly to Trump’s statement.
The wind farm in question had drawn protests from coastal communities, with critics arguing that the turbines would mar ocean views and harm wildlife, while supporters pointed to potential job creation and reduced emissions.
Trump’s public backing of Van Drew marks the latest in a series of political efforts targeting offshore wind plans across multiple East Coast states.
