Snapchat threat targeting Utica middle school traced to dispute between groups

UTICA, N.Y. — A social media threat that raised concerns at a Utica middle school has been traced back to a dispute between groups in the community, according to police.

Officials said the threat, which surfaced March 17, was posted in a Snapchat video referencing Donovan Middle School.

Authorities quickly launched an investigation alongside the Utica City School District to identify those involved.

Investigators determined the video stemmed from an earlier altercation between two groups and was directed at each other rather than the school itself.

Police said all individuals identified so far have stated the threat toward the school was not credible.

Despite that, officials are continuing to investigate the situation, and charges could still be filed if warranted.

Additional security measures have been put in place at Donovan Middle School for the remainder of the week as a precaution.

Community organizations are also working with those involved to help deescalate tensions and prevent further incidents.
