WASHINGTON, D.C. — The D.C. Metro Police Department is mourning the loss of Investigator Wayne David, who died after being shot while attempting to recover a firearm during an investigation on Wednesday evening.
The incident occurred around 5:40 p.m. on August 28, when officers from the Robbery Suppression Unit were canvassing the 4500 block of Quarles Street, Northeast. Officers observed a suspect fleeing from a suspicious vehicle and later saw him discard a firearm into a storm drain near I-295. As Investigator David attempted to retrieve the weapon, it discharged, fatally injuring him.
Investigator David, a 25-year veteran of the department, was transported by helicopter to an area hospital, where he later died from his injuries. The suspect, who fled the scene on a motorcycle, was captured on surveillance cameras.
The Metropolitan Police Department and the community are deeply saddened by this tragic loss.
