Veteran nypd cop arrested for south jersey road rage shooting

NEW YORK, NY—Authorities in Voorhees Township have apprehended and charged a New York man in connection with a shooting incident that escalated from an apparent road rage situation. Camden County Prosecutor Grace C. MacAulay and Police Chief Louis Bordi announced the arrest of 27-year-old Hieu Tran, an NYPD officer from Yonkers, NY.

Tran faces several charges, including first-degree attempted murder for shooting a 30-year-old man from Voorhees Township.

Additional charges against him include second-degree aggravated assault and second-degree possession of a weapon for an unlawful purpose. The incident occurred on the night of Friday, May 17, at the intersection of Route 73 and Cooper Road, where a multi-vehicle crash led to the discovery of a driver with a gunshot wound. The victim was urgently transported to Cooper University Hospital and is still receiving treatment.

The investigation, which utilized surveillance footage, cell phone records, and ballistics evidence, identified Tran as the shooter. The ballistics evidence was matched to Tran’s department-issued firearm. Tran was arrested at the NYPD headquarters and is currently held in New York, awaiting extradition to New Jersey.

The investigation remains active with the collaboration of multiple agencies, including the NYPD Internal Affairs Bureau and the New Jersey State Police Ballistics Unit.

Tran serves as a public information officer for the New York City Police Department.
