100 mph escape attempt ends in arrest on NJ Turnpike
LEONIA, N.J. — A wanted man sparked a dangerous overnight chase after ramming multiple police vehicles and fleeing at speeds nearing 100 mph before being captured on the Turnpike.
The chaos began around 12:30 a.m. March 16 when officers spotted the suspect sitting in a white Jeep Cherokee on Broad Avenue.
As officers attempted to block the vehicle, the driver suddenly threw it into reverse and slammed into a patrol car with an officer still inside.
Moments later, the suspect sped forward, struck another police vehicle, and took off through local streets.
Police briefly pursued but pulled back as speeds climbed to nearly 100 mph.
An alert was quickly broadcast, and New Jersey State Police later located the vehicle on the Turnpike in Carlstadt.
After a short pursuit, troopers took the suspect into custody.
Authorities identified him as 36-year-old Jamal K. Johnson of the Bronx, who was wanted on a domestic violence warrant out of North Bergen.
He now faces multiple charges, including aggravated assault on a law enforcement officer, resisting arrest, eluding, and obstruction.
Officials said no officers suffered serious injuries during the incident.
