Police say a Dorchester woman was struck and killed after an alleged carjacking sent a vehicle speeding through Mattapan Square
BOSTON, Mass. — A Dorchester woman was killed after an alleged carjacking suspect drove onto a sidewalk and struck her before crashing into an MBTA bus in Mattapan, where community members helped restrain the suspect until police arrived.
Boston police identified the victim as 32-year-old Mabinty Janneh of Dorchester.
The incident began at about 1:59 p.m. Saturday when officers assigned to District B-3 responded to a report of a carjacking near 1466 Blue Hill Avenue in Mattapan.
When officers arrived, they found Janneh unresponsive on the ground. She was pronounced dead at the scene.
Police said officers also observed a vehicle that had crashed into an MBTA bus near 1629 Blue Hill Avenue and found a large crowd gathered around the wreckage.
According to investigators, several community members had restrained the suspect until officers arrived and took him into custody.
The investigation determined the incident began with an apparent motor vehicle crash near Blue Hill Avenue and Woodhaven Street.
Police said the suspect exited the damaged vehicle and ran to the area of 1480 Blue Hill Avenue, where he allegedly approached a woman waiting at a car wash, pulled her from her vehicle and drove away in the stolen car.
The suspect then traveled the wrong way on Blue Hill Avenue toward Mattapan Square.
Authorities allege that after the carjacking, the suspect drove at a high rate of speed on the sidewalk, where he struck Janneh before colliding with another vehicle at the intersection of Blue Hill Avenue and Fairway Street.
Police said the suspect continued fleeing before coming to a stop after crashing into an MBTA bus.
The suspect was identified as 37-year-old Ibraim Matos of Hyde Park.
Matos is expected to be arraigned in Dorchester District Court on charges of murder, carjacking, leaving the scene of an accident resulting in death, and leaving the scene of an accident resulting in personal injury.
The investigation remains ongoing.
