North Bergen man charged after woman stabbed on Union City street

UNION CITY, NJ – A 35-year-old man has been arrested and charged in connection with a stabbing that left a woman injured in Union City over the weekend, prosecutors said.

Axel Fuentes-Zavala, of North Bergen, was taken into custody Monday at his home and transported to the Hudson County Correctional Facility. He faces charges of aggravated assault, unlawful possession of a weapon, possession of a weapon for an unlawful purpose and harassment, according to Acting Hudson County Prosecutor Wayne Mello.

The stabbing happened Saturday near 30th Street and Jeanette Street, where a woman told police she was attacked after a brief interaction with an unknown man. She was stabbed several times in the back but her injuries were described as non-life-threatening.

Investigators later linked Fuentes-Zavala to the attack and discovered he was already wanted on an open warrant tied to a similar incident in North Bergen.

He is awaiting his first court appearance.
